 | | As minister of the interior in the Sarrien government formed on 14 March 1906, Clémenceau faced difficult problems, notably the enforcement of the new law (1905) separating church and state, as well as serious labor problems. |
 | | It marked him, however, as the “strong man” of the day in French politics, and, when the ministry of Ferdinand Sarrien resigned on 25 October 1906, Clémenceau became président du conseil. |
 | | Yet he was obsessed with the need for a unified military command and was able ultimately to convert to his viewpoint the allied governments and military leaders. |
