Ferdinand I (of Romania) - Search View - MSN Encarta
Ferdinand I (of Romania) (1865-1927), king of Romania (1914-1927), nephew of King Carol I. Ferdinand's father was Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, whose nomination for the Spanish throne precipitated the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
Ferdinand succeeded Carol in 1914 shortly after the outbreak of World War I. Although a member of the German dynastic Hohenzollern family, Ferdinand supported the Allies from 1916 until the defeat of the Romanians late in 1917.
His subsequent reign was marked by unsuccessful attempts at land reforms and by a problem of royal succession because of the relations of his son (later King Carol II) with a commoner.
