Ferdinando Fairfax, 2nd Baron Fairfax of Cameron (29 March 1584 - 14 March 1648), English parliamentary general, was a son of Thomas Fairfax[?], whom Charles I in 1627 created Baron Fairfax of Cameron in the peerage of Scotland.
Fairfax was victorious at Selby[?] on 11 April 1644, and joining the Scots, besieged York, after which he was present at the Battle of Marston Moor (2 July 1644), where he commanded the infantry and was routed.
Fairfax resigned his command on the passing of the Self-denying Ordinance, but remained a member of the committee for the government of Yorkshire, and was appointed, on 24 July 1645, steward of the manor of Pontefract.

The troubles of the later Commonwealth recalled Lord Fairfax to political activity, and for the last time his appearance in arms helped to shape the future of the country, when George Monck invited him to assist in the operations about to be undertaken against Lambert's army.

Lord Fairfax died at Nunappleton on the 12th of November 1671, and was buried at Bilborough, near York.

Ferdinando Fairfax, 2nd Lord Fairfax of Cameron (29 March 1584–14 March 1648), English parliamentary general, was a son of Thomas Fairfax, whom Charles I in 1627 created Lord Fairfax of Cameron in the Peerage of Scotland.
Born in Yorkshire, Ferdinando Fairfax obtained his military education in the Netherlands, and served as member of the English parliament for Boroughbridge during the six parliaments which met between 1614 and 1629 and also during the Short Parliament of 1640.
By his first wife, Mary, daughter of Edmund Sheffield, 3rd Lord Sheffield (afterwards 1st earl of Mulgrave), he had six daughters and two sons: Thomas, who succeeded him as 3rd lord, and Charles, a colonel of horse, who was killed at Marston Moor.

In the first Scottish war Fairfax had commanded a regiment in the king's army; then on the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642 he was made commander of the parliamentary forces in York-shire, with Newcastle as his opponent.

Thomas Fairfax was born at Denton Hall, near Otley, Yorkshire, on 17 January 1612, the eldest son of Ferdinando, 2nd Lord Fairfax.
Fairfax was out of his depth in political intrigue and his actions were largely prompted by Cromwell and Ireton during this period.
Fairfax stated that he would fight to the death to resist any invasion of England, but was reluctant to attack a country linked by the Solemn League and Covenant.

Fairfax and his son Sir Thomas held off Royalist attacks on Leeds during the spring of 1643, but they were severely defeated at Adwalton Moor near Bradford on 30 June, which left the Royalists in control of the whole of Yorkshire except for the port of Hull.
The Fairfaxes withdrew to Hull from where they directed raids on Royalist strongholds in Yorkshire, which prompted the Earl of Newcastle to abandon his march south and return to besiege Hull.
Lord Fairfax recaptured Selby in April 1644 and joined the Earl of Manchester and the Army of the Covenant at the siege of York.
