Ferengi - Memory Alpha - A Wikia wiki
Ferengi civilization was built on the ideals of free enterprise, where all other goals were subjugated to the pursuit of profit.
Their governing body known as the Ferengi Alliance was formed over a period of ten thousand years, beginning with the establishment of a system of currency, to their purchase of warp technology, and finally to its current state in the 24th century.
However, Ferengi managed to avoid many of the worst aspects of an evolving culture and their social history is notable for the absence of atrocities such as slavery or genocide, a distinction the Ferengi feel makes them morally superior.

 Ferengi
Ferengi culture is so devoted to unregulated capitalism that concepts such as labor unions, sick leave, vacations, or paid overtime for workers are considered abhorrent, because they would interfere with exploitation of workers.
Ferengi women traditionally softened food for members of their family by chewing it, and selling one's mother for gold-pressed latinum, the principal form of legal tender, is an act that would be looked on with admiration in Ferengi society.
Ferengi cuisine consists of insects and other small invertebrates, such as "tube grubs," either served live, jellied or juiced.

Picard, commanding the USS Stargazer, destroyed the Ferengi ship, which never identified itself, and as a result Bok, the father of the Ferengi who captained that vessel, sought revenge on Picard, first in Next Generation's first season episode, "The Battle", and later in its seventh season, in the episode "Bloodlines".
In theory, every business transaction that a Ferengi makes is governed by 285 Rules of Acquisition, though the rules themselves give the Ferengi license to cheat, steal, and bend the truth to suit their needs.
Ferengi rule of acquisition #35 says "Peace is good for business." However rule of acquisition #34 says "war is good for business." Ferengi engage in the practice of selling defensive weaponry to weaker species under attack, in addition to selling to species that are more belligerent.

Creation of the Ferengi is also seen as a thinly-veiled means to satirize studio and network executives: obsessed with profit, unethical, intelligent, inscrutable (to Betazoids, anyway) and technologically powerful, all male characters who would prefer their female "property" to be unclothed.
The quest for profit even reaches into Ferengi religion – similar to the prosperity gospel taught in some Christian circles, it is common for Ferengi to pray for financial success.
The Ferengi sensationalized this incident as "The Battle of Maxia." Daimon Bok, the father of the Ferengi who captained that vessel, sought revenge on Picard, first in Next Generation's first season episode, "The Battle", and later in its seventh season, in the episode "Bloodlines".

One such example of traditional Bolian cuisine was the consumption of meat that had been allowed to partially decay.
Due to this, Quark, the Ferengi trade intermediary between the Karemma and the Federation, charged Hanok three percent on the value lost due to "unforeseen" currency fluctuations in the Bolian Credit Exchange for their shipment of Karemman fleece.

Rule of Acquisition,” said the Ferengi with a forced chuckle.
The substance under discussion gracelessly cascaded from its container and plodded onto the floor with a splash, leaving a trail of thick goop in its wake; it flailed a few weak tendrils into the air, squealed a few more times, and then fell over dead.
