Fergus Hume - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fergusson Wright Hume, known as Fergus Hume (8 July 1859 – 12 July 1932) was an English novelist.
Hume was born in England, the second son of Dr James Hume.
Hume was a capable writer of mystery stories, and may be looked upon as one of the precursors of the many writers of detective stories whose work was so popular in the twentieth century.

Fergus Hume - Biography and Works
Fergus Hume (1859—1932), English lawyer and prolific author spent a number of years in New Zealand and Australia where he began his career of more than thirty years writing detective stories, including his first novel and international best-seller The Mystery of a Hansom Cab (1886).
Fergusson [Fergus] Wright Hume was born 8 July 1859 at Powick, Worcestershire, England, son of Glaswegian Dr. James Collin Hume, a steward at the Worcestershire Pauper Lunatic Asylum and his wife Mary Ferguson.
Hume spent much time in Little Bourke Street to gather material and his first effort was The Mystery of a Hansom Cab (1886), a worthy contibution to the genre.

Weird Menace Pulps and Supernatural Detection
Hume cites many ancestors in his novel: Poe, Gaboriau (the Preface), Du Boisgobey (the end of Chapter 1, where Hume compares the plot of Hansom Cab to Du Boisgobey's An Omnibus Mystery), Green (Chapter 7), Mary Elizabeth Braddon (Chapter 8).
Hume's ability to make the relations of the characters to each other ambiguous, so that events can be interpreted in a multitude of ways, is at the core of the modern detective novel.
Hume's various twists and turns on the relationships are nowhere as clever as Christie's, but they certainly point in the same direction.

Always known as Fergus Hume, his name is sometimes given as Fergus William Hume, but the obituary notice in the Otago Daily Times gave his Christian names as Fergusson Wright.
Hume was brought to Dunedin when very young by his father, and was educated at the Otago Boys' High School and the university of Otago.
Hume never repeated the success of his first book, of which something like half a million copies were sold in his lifetime, but he had a public for his other books; as many as seven were sometimes published in one year.

Its author, Fergus Hume, was born in England and migrated to New Zealand as a child with his family.
But the investigation is actually a small part of this novel which focuses, rather, on the people whose lives have been effected by the murder — the young woman the dead man had once courted, her fiancé who is accused of his murder, and her father, a millionaire with a mysterious past.
Hume followed his creation to London where he continued his career as a writer, but without ever again seeing the success of his first novel.
