Topic: Fergusonite

Some Results of late Mineral Research in Llano County, Texas
Of fergusonite several very pure masses and large aggregations of rough crystals were found, up to five pounds in weight.
Fergusonite.-The mono-hydrated variety made the best radiographs, but all the varieties (of which there are four at the locality) showed more or less action upon the sensitive film.
The fergusonite was of the purest kind and almost transparent, and somewhat resembled the famous Spanish sphalerite.

The uranium minerals are fl with brownish fl to fl streak, have glassy luster and conchoidal fracture, and are metamict.
Fergusonite is marked by even higher concentrations of yttrium and rare earth elements, and is further distinctive in that it is devoid of detectable iron.
Fergusonite contains the least uranium (5-8 wt % UO2) of the three niobium-tantalum minerals, and is always late in the paragenesis.

Description: Fergusonite is a rare earth mineral found in granitic and other pegmatites.
It may also be found in placer deposits from the weathering and erosion of such bodies.
MARATHON COUNTY: Tiny acicular crystals of fergusonite, approximately 100 microns long, are found in pegmatites cutting amphibole syenite in the Stettin.

Dysprosium: Occurrence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
Dysprosium is the most abundant of the heavier (yttrium group) lanthanide elements and is approximately as abundant as arsenic, hafnium and uranium.
The more important mineral sources of dysprosium include xenotime, gadolinite, euxenite, samarskite, fergusonite, blomstrandine, polycrase, loparite and yttroparisite.
Fergusonite is found in Greenland, Norway, Sweden and USA and samarskite in Madagascar, North Carolina and Ontario.

See Tantalus.] (Chem.) A rare nonmetallic element found in certain minerals, as tantalite, samarskite, and fergusonite, and isolated as a dark powder which becomes steel-gray by burnishing.
Identified in 1802 by Ekeberg and isolated in 1820 by Jons J. Berzelius.

Thulium: Occurrence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
The most important sources of thulium are the minerals rich yttrium: xenotime, gadolinite, euxenite, samarskite, fergusonite, blomstrandine, loparite and yttroparisite.
However, small amounts of thulium can be found in many common rocks and minerals like apatite and monazite, that also contains cerium.
Fergusonite is found and extracted in Greenland, Sweden, Norway, North and South Carolina and in Texas.

euxenite vs aeschynite, most likely also the fergusonite- and samarskite-groups.
Often (always?) Ta (as opposed to Nb) is stabilizing the low-T modifications (Stubican 1964, fergusonite; Aleksandrov 1963, aeschynite-euxenite).
If this is true it would suggest that at any given temperature the crystallizing Nb-Ta mineral actually is driving the Ta/Nb-fractionation rather than just reflecting the Ta/Nb ratio of the surrounding melt.
