Santa Barbara was the first mission founded by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, Father Serra's successor as President of the California missions.
It was one and a half miles northeast of the Presidio (fort) in a hilly area called "rocky mound" with a majestic view of the valley and channel.
It was Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, his successor, who raised the cross here and placed Padre Antonio Paterna, a companion of Serra, in charge.

According to Lasuen, the poisoning was caused from drinking mescal (a Mexican liquor) which had been stored in a copper container lined with tin, and not by any misdeeds of the Indians.
Father Sitjar conferred with Father Lasuen, and the President sent Jose de Miguel to the mission; he was to attempt, by gentle means, to persuade Padre Horra to accompany him to Monterey; 'Two surgeons at Monterey examined Horra and declared him insane; the governor made it official, and Horra was returned to Mexico.

 Mission San Juan Capistrano
The first occasion was in 1775, after the Father Presidente Junípero Serra had convinced Captain Rivera that a mission to interrupt the long journey between San Diego and San Gabriel was urgently needed.
Soon after, Father Fermin Lasuén and a fellow padre were sent from Carmel and, with the assistance of a small band of soldiers from San Diego, they set up a cross and dedicated the new mission on October 30, 1775.
Lasuen took formal possession of the land in the name of the crown and dedicated the ground.

The "Queen of the Missions" was the tenth church on El Camino Real to be established in California and the first one founded by Franciscan Friar Fermin Lasuen on the feast of St. Barbara, Dec. 4, 1786.
That year a Spanish force, led by Sebastian Vizcaíno and accompanied by Carmelite Friars, entered the channel on the vigil of the feast of St. Barbara and named the body of water for her; eventually the title was applied to the presidio, mission, city and county.
Friar Lasuen --- who succeeded Blessed Junípero Serra as president of the missions --- chose the site for Mission Santa Barbara on the top of a rising slope of land that overlooked the channel and valley, offering one of the most striking views of all the missions.

Built of wood on a brick foundation in what was called the "Italianate Victorian" style, the square tower protrudes from the roof of the 2 story house and a lantern room perches at its summit.
The site was selected for a lighthouse in 1852 by Phineas Banning, but it wasn't until the popularity of the California Gold rush brought several ships and crews to a wattery grave that Congress allocated funds for the construction of 8 light stations from San Diego to San Fransisco.
Point Fermin's first keepers were sisters by the names of Helen and Mary L. Smith.

It was a dry, windy plain that was very hot in the summer and freezing cold on winter nights.

 Point Fermin Park, San Pedro, CA
