		FERN, the Forests and the European Union Resource Network, is an international non-governmental organization created in 1995 to keep track of the EU’s involvement in forests and to co-ordinate NGO activities at the European level.
		Although FERN is known for its work on forests, since 2000 FERN has widened its scope beyond forests to also include work on general aid, trade and climate issues, as many of the decisions made in these areas have a direct or indirect impact on forests and forest peoples’ rights.
		FERN advocacy activities aim to link different movements and organisations and create effective networks to campaign on issues the organisation believes to be important.

	Ferns of the Bruce Trail

		The Fern Society of Victoria Combined Fern and Vireya Rhododendron Show will be held on Saturday April 27 and Sunday April 28, 2002, at the Mount Waverly Community Centre (corner of Miller Crescent and Stephenson Road in Mount Waverly).
		The American Fern Society Fern Forays this year will be held on August 3 and August 4, 2002, in Madison Wisconsin.
		On Saturday, August 3, there is an all-day trip (7:30 AM to 6:00 PM) to see the Ferns of Wisconsin's Driftless Area.

	Pteridophytes of Wisconsin: Pteridium aquilinum, bracken fern
		Pteridium aquilinum is a common and distinctive fern in Wisconsin.
		The blades tend to be large and although they are spread out along a rhizome they often form stands dense enough to thoroughly shade the ground beneath.
		In Wisconsin it is common throughout the state in forest clearings, barrens, pastures, roadsides and other uncanopied sites and persists long after forest has reclaimed cleared areas.

		The sporophyte phase of the life cycle is much larger than is the gametophyte, but the gametophyte develops separately from the sporophyte and does not depend on it for nutrition.
		Some nice images of the pterophytes are available at The University of Wisconsin.
		These include many species of the sporophyte (the large plant we generally think of as the "fern" and a few pictures of live or stained microscope slides of the gametophyte.
