An Industrialist, he joined the Socialist Party in 1909 and served as deputy from Bouches du Rhone (Marseilles) from 1909 to 1940, Commissioner of Maritime Transportation and the Merchant Marine 1918-'19 and President of the Chamber of Deputies 1927 - '35.
Bouisson was appointed Premier in June 1935 but resigned after four days and failing to form a Government.
He voted in favor of granting special powers to Marshal Petain and retired from political life in July 1940.

On July 12, 1940, Laval became vice-premier and named Fernand de Brinon to lead negotiations with the Germans.
Laval was enthusiastically pro-Nazi; his demands for a Franco-German military alliance led to him being sacked from the government and arrested in December 13, 1940.
