Fernandina was first settled in the mid-16th century by Spanish troops guarding the north Florida frontier.
Following an 1818 yellow fever epidemic, town and port languished until Fernandina became the eastern terminus of a cross-state rail line in 1853 with heavy trade was in cotton, timber, and naval stores.
Union troops occupied Fernandina during the Civil War and, although most of the port's facilities were damaged or destroyed, a post-war boom occurred.

Fernandina, a bark, was purchased 29 July 1861 at New York as Florida; and renamed and commissioned 16 November 1861, Acting Volunteer Lieutenant G.W Browne in command.
The bark discovered the schooner Kate out of Nassau, run aground on 2 April 1862, and after taking her papers off, burned the schooner, since both Fernandina and her party boarding the blockade runner were under Confederate fire from the shore.
On 11 June, Fernandina was reassigned to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron which she joined off Charleston, S.C. Aside from the summer of 1863, when she sailed north for repairs, the bark blockaded at St. Simon'sand St. Catherine's, Georgia, and in Ossabaw Sound.

On 11 April Fernandina was climbed from the NW by David Day [and others], who reported an apparently inactive lava flow reaching from the W side of the caldera (near the site of the major eruption of 1968) to the lake.
Fernandina last erupted in 1995 (figure 6), and had been quiet and seemingly unchanged when a team from the Ecuadorian Institute of Geophysics (IG) flew over it in late March 2005.
