Fernando Affonso Collor de Mello (born August 12, 1949) was president of Brazil from 1990 to 1992.
Collor was born in a political family, led by his father Arnon de Mello, a journalist and former governor of Alagoas.
Collor´s impeachment was tried before the Brazilian Senate, presided over by the country´s chief justice, and on December 29, 1992 he was found guilty, thus losing his right hold political office for 8 years, according to the Constitution.

In May 1992, the statements made by the president's brother, Pedro Collor de Melo, caused an explosion in the political situation: the president and his advisors were accused of receiving enormous amounts of money from private companies as a kickback for awarding profitable contracts.
Maintaining his innocence, Collor complied with the parliamentary resolution and temporarily transferred the presidency to Vice President Itamar Augusto Cautiero Franco (2 Oct 1992).
