		He had been vacationing in Sri Lanka with his partner, interior designer Nate Berkus, a frequent guest on the Oprah Winfrey show.
		Bengoechea and Berkus were asleep when the deadly tidal wave slammed into the island.

		Chicago's NBC5 reported last night that Nate's family and friends had lost contact with him, but this morning's New York Post quotes an Oprah spokeswoman as saying that Nate was still safe and on his way to the U.S. embassy in Sri Lanka.
		Sadly, as Kathy mentions below, the New York Times says that Fernando Bengoechea, Nate's "partner" (or "friend"), is among the eight (now eleven) Americans dead.

		However, I haven't seen anything in the media where Fernando was written about (interviews, etc.) as a gay man. Fernando may be gay, and in a relationship with Nate, but that has probably not been established for certain yet to the satisfaction of the editors.
		If he has repeatedly referred to Fernando as his friend in interviews, then the fact that Nate is gay doen't mean Fernando is in the eyes of the media.
		The fact that Fernando's sister might have confirmed on an internet blog that they were a couple living together is not considered reliable information by most journalists.
