Fernando Clavijo returned to coaching in Major League Soccer on December 22nd when he was presented as the new Head Coach of the Colorado Rapids, taking over the vacancy left by Tim Hankinson.
Clavijo’s arrival in the Mile High city began on the right foot, as his attitude and philosophy was immediately welcomed in a town accustomed to winning traditions with all of its sports teams.
Clavijo began his coaching career in 1989 while still a player, and began to focus full-time on coaching after his retirement at the age of 38, which took him to the Pacific Northwest in 1994.

Fernando began his professional career at the age of 16 in his native Uruguay, where he played for the national junior team and then for Atletico Atenas in the Uruguyan Second Division.
He came to the United States in 1979 with his wife Martha to play for New York Apollos in the American Soccer League (ASL), and remained in the league in 1980 and 1981 while playing for New York United.
