Filmtracks: FernGully: The Last Rainforest (Alan Silvestri)
FernGully: The Last Rainforest: (Alan Silvestri) Few films are so blatantly motivated by politics as this animated adventure in the rainforests.
To be honest, FernGully: The Last Rainforest is one of those children's films that masks itself in the feel-good genre of filmmaking while pushing the real agenda at children...
There isn't much adventure in the score for FernGully: The Last Rainforest, but there is an overdose of cheesy attitude and well-rendered synthetic moments of awe that are meant to wow the minds of children.

Both of us have overseas production experience [Dave spent eight years at Wang as the animation supervisor; Phil has experience in Korea, Taiwan and three years in the Philippines], so we are familiar with the tendency for the American side of production to design things that are difficult for the overseas artists to reproduce.
We deliberately designed the film to be fast-paced but eliminated complex sequences, crowd scenes and scenes that would require good acting on the part of the animator.

Ferngully is based on a children's novel by Diana Young and introduces the viewer to an enchanted rainforest in Australia (watch out for the only location hint towards the middle of the movie when a kangaroo and platypus appear out of nowhere!!!).
The rainforest is inhabited by all manner of weird and wonderful animals (I won't even begin to describe the psycho fruitbat voiced by Robin Williams!), fairies and flora.
Ferngully is definitely one to bring home for the kids (and possibly the odd adult looking for a feel-good animated feature), after all, let's face it, Ferngully is a lot more respectable than Dragonball Z or Pokemon!!!

FernGully: The Last Rainforest" is an animated feature with political agenda -- a didactic cartoon.
The human characters are rather hapless and bumbling, especially a young sun-burnished California blond named Zak (Jonathan Ward), whom Crysta, in a panic, shrinks down to fairy size.
Zak must be returned to the humans' world to sound the alarm for others who might greedily destroy the place he's grown to love.

“FernGully” is one of those lesser known animated movies of the early 90’s which, amid a flurry of other animated releases, tended to get forgotten.
This Family Fun Edition release of the movie on DVD is a great reminder of what a good children’s movie this was, as well as being interesting enough to keep most adults entertained.

DVD Verdict Review - Ferngully: The Last Rainforest: Family Fun Edition
Many eons ago when humans lived peacefully with the fairies of Ferngully a nightmarish creature called Hexxus came into being and threatened the very existence of life itself.
The backgrounds are lush (having a rainforest as the main backdrop doesn't hurt), and the characters are fluid and idealized, designed very much in the school of Don Bluth (Titan A.E., An American Tail, All Dogs Go To Heaven, and The Secret of NIMH).
Runners up in the personality department include Magi, the protector of Ferngully, and of course the villainous Hexxus (voiced by Tim Curry) -- who gets a bit of a build up on the outset but when he's finally released goes straight into one-dimensional revenge mode.

dOc treehouse: FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992)
I first saw FernGully: The Last Rainforest at age 10, and even then, I realized how sappy it was—an appropriate description, I suppose (but I kid with the wacky tree humor, so wipe your eyes and read on).
But, what I meant to say, before my latent psychosis spewed forth onto the monitor, was that FernGully is, ultimately, little more than a feature-length animated ecology PSA (sadly, Leo the Lightning Bug does not appear, as he was in rehab throughout the shoot).
Years ago, they lived with humans in the rainforest, until a stereotypical evil fl cloud came down from the sky to burn the forest and menace the land with its creepily fey Tim Curry accent.

FernGully is a tropical paradise though, loaded with trees, plants, and inhabitants of all kinds, but of course, Crysta wants to explore beyond even all of that.
I had some doubts about FernGully at the time, as it makes no bones about packing a message about the treatment of the environment, but I think it is delivered in fine fashion, just enough push, never too much.
FernGully is presented in a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, with a full frame edition included on the disc's flip side.

FernGully: The Last Rainforest" sounds as though its environmentally correct message will fall upon you like a heavy rubber tree.
In a magical part of the rain forest called FernGully, elderly fairy Magi Lune (the voice of Grace Zabriskie) is trying to initiate her daughter Crysta (Samantha Mathis) in spellmaking and harnessing nature's magical forces.
There's also a little "Star Wars" in there, and a dab of "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." But this isn't so much plagiarism, as it is the synchronicity of myth.

IGN: FernGully: The Last Rainforest (Family Fun Edition) Review
The story is simple: the rainforest, which has been preserved for thousands of years after locking away a magical demon named Hexxus (Tim Curry) inside of a tree, becomes imperiled when humans accidentally release the evil spirit.
The overbearing moral story of saving the rainforest is mere politics being shoved between colorful moving frames.
This rainforest fantasy proves to be more nostalgic drizzle than comedic downpour.

(Interestingly enough, Hexxus appeared to come from a volcano, but....how could nature be bad???) This history soon turned to legend as all the fairies felt safe in their Ferngully haven.
She encounters Zak (Ward - "Steel Magnolias") who is with a group who are cutting down the trees with reckless abandon (Of course!!!).
The voices are well done and Williams delivers a few laughs, but his performance is nowhere near the genie from "Aladdin." Like I said, blatant propaganda aside, this film is midly entertaining.

The fairies of the rainforest tell tales of humans, generally considered to be legends--- fairy tales, you might say.
The Making of FernGully, the film’s original puff piece from 1992, serves the purpose of giving a lighter overview of the film, obviously having been used as a marketing tool for those who had not seen the film.
This film was made with the purpose of being important, and while one can argue at the pretentiousness of such an effort, or whether it succeeded, one cannot listen to the creators in the special features without developing a sense that they were extremely earnest.
