Although they were a great system (making a profit of $1 million in their last year of operation when the buses lost $9 million), I agree that at the time they were often a barrier to cars and that there were few areas which incorporated dedicated running zones and stops.
Brisbane could implement trams with more dedicated running, with the latest safety designs, with more effective computerised traffic system monitoring and management, and with the convenience of the systems in Melbourne.

Brisbane Light Rail Proposals - Railpage Australia™ Forums (Queensland)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Brisbane in the 1950s was defined by its trams even more so than Melbourne, to the point that buses were almost non-existant in the city and were really confined to the outer suburbs away from the railway.
I think where Brisbane went wrong was that the trams were run by the council rather than an independent trust or authority, and there was no strong visionary like Risson in Melbourne.
There are also many bus routes in Brisbane that are overcrouded and it will be too expensive and impractical to build a railway line to cope with demand so light rail may just be the answer.

The fork line with a gradient of 1 in 20, was provided to turn the disastrous McKeen Rail Cars (1913-1931), which were generally permitted to run with passengers in the Forward direction only.
The fork line was later found to be too steep for the low powered cars, particularly with a trailer attached, and as a result the gradient of the fork line was eased to a gradient of 1 in 25, 4 months after construction.
The fork line was out of use by December 1950, with eventual removal occurring by 1963, leaving only the refuge as a legacy of the failure of QGR's first venture into Rail Motors.
