The Ferrari 308 and 328 are very special cars to me. Their inspired packaging makes them a joy to use, their performance and handling are stimulating and their looks are a supreme Pininfarina achievement.

During late 1976, Ferrari began producing the first steel-bodied 308 GTB's, these being mainly for the American market as lightweight glassfibre examples were still being sold in Europe until June 1977.
These 308 Spyder's were popularised by high profile appearances in Magnum PI where Tom Selleck's wealthy private investigator charachter 'Thomas Magnum' chose a Rosso GTS to cruise the streets of Hawaii.
Designated as the 308 GTB 4, presumably in reference to the FIA's Group 4 racing and rally regulations of the time, this one-off competition-inspired version featured a number or hot upgrades, some of which were later seen on Ferrari's awesome 288 GTO.

The added power, along with a new 4.06:l final-drive ratio (versus 3.71:1 in earlier 308 models), turned in roughly the same performance as the carbureted 308s despite being some 300 pounds heavier, and this weight was mostly added in the rear, which didn't help the car's already rear-biased porkage.
The carbureted 1977 308 GTS had a weight distribution of 42.2/57.8, whereas the 1983 308 GTSi QV's was 40.6/59.4.

7,400 328 Ferraris were produced by the time the model was replaced in 1989 by the new 348, bringing the total for the 308/328 generation to nearly 20,000.

Our 308 GTB sat until 1999, when the decision was made to try and homologate the former IMSA GTU car as an SCCA GT2 car.
In August 2000 the SCCA accepted the Ferrari 308/288 GTO for racing, with the engine mounted in-line and with a Hewland gearbox, but the engine had to be converted from injection to carburetion and the IMSA legal 12" wide rear wheels had to be converted to an SCCA legal width of only 10".
As 308 GTB s/n 20537 was prepared for its first test, it was time to contact the SCCA and clarify if there were any other problem areas needing to be addressed before the car could race.

This very fine steel bodied 308 from 1979 is finished in the traditional colour of red with a fl interior, having been garaged while in the hands of the current owner the cars body remains in very fine order showing none of the normal signs of corrosion associated with these early 308 models.
