Customers were disappointed that Ferrari stuck with this layout unlike with the race cars, and the Daytona was replaced by the mid-engined 365 GTB Berlinetta Boxer in 1973.
Ferrari, reportedly upset that a replica was getting so much attention, later supplied two new Testarossas for use in the show.
Ferrari actively monitors the manufacture and sale of these replicas closely; the few remaining makers now widely refrain from marketing their products as replica Ferrari models and downplay the resemblance to the genuine cars, which includes rarely using freely available identifier badges.

Not only was Ferrari in full flower, but Maserati with its Bora and Lamborghini with its Miura were pointing the street-legal sports/GT car in a new and exciting direction.
Despite this, Enzo Ferrari decided that his newest berlinetta would use the traditional configuration of all its previous "civilian" sporting machines -- front engine, rear drive, although the front-mounted engine was situated well back in the chassis for balanced weight distribution.
The 365 GTB/4 also was the first Ferrari to use fiberglass "tub" construction to form the passenger compartment, a technique that would be used in many subsequent Ferraris.

First seen as a concept in 1971, the Boxer was not the first mid-engined roadgoing Ferrari, but it was the first to have a 12 cylinder engine (the preceding Dino had a V6).
Ferrari claimed a top speed of 188mph for the car, but in fact, no independent road tests were able to match that figure, with 174mph being a more realistic top speed.
The new car was an evolution of the original Boxer, and outwardly the differences included a change to four rear lights and exhaust pipes instead of six, a new small chin spoiler at the front, and slightly different engine air vents on the rear deck.
