Ferrari Daytona - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Customers were disappointed that Ferrari stuck with this layout unlike with the race cars, and the Daytona was replaced by the mid-engined 365 GTB Berlinetta Boxer in 1973.
Ferrari, reportedly upset that a replica was getting so much attention, later supplied two new Testarossas for use in the show.
Ferrari actively monitors the manufacture and sale of these replicas closely; the few remaining makers now widely refrain from marketing their products as replica Ferrari models and downplay the resemblance to the genuine cars, which includes rarely using freely available identifier badges.

Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They used a mid-mounted flat-12 engine, replacing the FR Daytona, and succeeded in the Ferrari stable by the Testarossa.
The company also moved its V12 engines to the rear with its P and LM racing cars, but the Daytona was launched with its engine in front.
Though it shared its numerical designation with the Daytona, the Boxer was as different as could be.

The Daytona gained new notoriety in the 1980s as Detective Sonny Crockett's car in the first years of the TV show Miami Vice.
Ferrari, reportedly miffed that a fake was getting so much attention, supplied two new Testarossas for use in the show.
The GTC/4 rode on the same wheelbase and suspension as the Daytona, though the engine was down in power a bit to 340 bhp DIN (250 kW), as well as it having a regular gearbox instead of the rear mounted (transaxle) gearbox in the Daytona.

COBRA DAYTONA COUPE By Dennis Begley
Ferrari did not submit the required photos of the "optional body." The FIA bucked and said the GTO was a new car and wouldn't qualify.
The only other changes made in preparation for Daytona was some small plastic fences attached to the windscreen pillars to divert the air coming off the windshield to the rear brakes for cooling and a couple of panels riveted on to cover the rear tires.
Enzo Ferrari couldn't win the 1964 trophy with his cars so he used what no one was expecting to win, political clout.

Ferrari 365 GTB4C Daytona Competizione by Kyosho
The series I cars were very light compared to the roadgoing steel bodied Daytonas as they had aluminium body panels with a glassfibre bonnet and plexiglass in all the windows except for the windscreen.
After the 1971 season the racing Daytonas were homologated as Group 4 race cars and in order to comply with Grp4 regulations they had to share the same material for their body structure as on the road cars.
Four out of the five Series I Competizione Daytonas built in 1971 were converted to the same specification of the Series II cars (of which 5 were built in 1972) including chassis number 14437.

Rumors persist that Ferrari was actually intending to name their new model as such but for some reason they never officially used this evocative title themselves.
The Daytona was a stopgap model between Ferrari's outgoing 275 GTB/4 and their mid-engined 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer, the development of which was running well behind schedule.
However, despite the troubled background to its inception, Daytona's themselves were in no way affected, Ferrari producing what became the definitive GT of its time.

Before the Daytona was introduced to the public, Lamborghini set the world on fire with its debut of the Miura, and many auto enthusiast magazines quickly began calling that car the prettiest automobile ever built.
Despite this, Enzo Ferrari decided that his newest berlinetta would use the traditional configuration of all its previous "civilian" sporting machines - front engine, rear drive, although the front-mounted engine was situated well back in the chassis for balanced weight distribution.
The 365 GTB/4 also was the first Ferrari to use fiberglass "tub" construction to form the passenger compartment, a technique that would be used in many subsequent Ferraris.
