Topic: Ferrocement

Ferrocement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ferrocement is both a method and material used in building or sculpture with cement, sand, water and wire or mesh material - often called thin shell.
Thin shell ferrocement offers strength and economy along with broad application to include home building, creating sculptures, or building boats and ships.
In the yacht world, many designers, mostly in the 1970's, adapted their designs to the then very popular backyard building scheme of building a boat in the ferrocement medium.

 Ferro cement
Although ferrocement is not strictly a 'sustainable' technology as it uses cement and steel, it nevertheless employs them in a highly efficient and cost-effective manner.
Ferrocement in Auroville is used, among other things, in the construction of roof channels, doors, water tanks, latrines, slabs, various form works and biogas plants.
Ferrocement is a form of reinforced concrete using closely spaced multiple layers of mesh and/or small diameter rods completely infiltrated with, or encapsulated in, mortar.

Cement Association of Canada - Ferrocement
Ferrocement is a special type of reinforced concrete composed of closely spaced layers of continuous relatively thin metallic or nonmetallic mesh or wire embedded in cement-sand mortar.
Ferrocement is considered easy to produce in a variety of shapes and sizes; however, it is labor intensive.
Ferrocement is used to construct shell roofs, swimming pools, tunnel linings, silos, tanks, prefabricated houses, barges, boats, sculptures, and thin panels or sections usually less than 25 mm thick (ACI 549R and ACI 549.1R).

 Hvad er ferrocement til bådbygning
Stems, keels, sterns, frames etc. are set up for a ferrocement boat in exactly the same way as for any other type of boat building and the stringers and external wire netting goes on in exactly the same way as for a conventional timber planked boat, or a steel or ply-wood vessel.
Ferrocement is really a "hybrid" reinforced concrete, differing in the fact that the steel reinforcement matrix predominates rather than the concrete (mortar).
Many of the fine examples of ferrocement construction available today were built by professionals, or by amateurs with professional help, or by amateurs with a truly professional and time consuming approach to the construction.

Ferrocement engine beds are the means not only of attaching and aligning an engine accurately, but also a means of giving considerable additional longitudinal strength to the hull.
If ferrocement is used, access to the bilges and shaft must be given due thought, as well as the means to get at the hull and deck in the event of sustaining any damage in the fish hold area.
The ferrocement lining can be constructed by leaving 6 mm rod ties protruding from the hull and deck, gluing the insulation into position and finishing with two layers of mesh on a layer of 6 mm rods.
