One group of two parallel crystals, measuring 16 x 13 x 3 mm, was found associated with schorl, quartz, and albite in a pocket in the east end of the pegmatite.
What remains are several irregular subparallel stibiotantalite cores surrounded by vuggy ferrotapiolite and a partial crust of ferrocolumbite (not chemically analyzed), The small vugs are lined by 0.1-mm lustrous dark reddish-brown crystals of ferrotapiolite, in some areas exhibiting uniform crystallographic orientation.
The ferrocolumbite is present as a crystallographically continuous crust of 0.2-mm dark reddish-brown stepped crystals, which appears to be oriented with respect to the stibiotantalite cores.

Ferrocolumbite and a tantalum-rich ferrocolumbite occur as thick tabular crystals up to 3 mm in length in and near albitized zones in several small pegmatites.
Ferrocolumbite is overgrown by a bright yellow U-Nb oxide, which is completely metamict but yields, after recrystallization for twelve hours at 900 [degrees] C in an atmosphere of 95% Ar and 5% [H.sub.2], an X-ray diffraction pattern showing similarity to liandratite and petschekite.
A uranium member of the pyrochlore group occurs as brown to brick-red, millimeter-sized grains in albitized zones.

Detailed exploration of the Verity Carbonatite, including geochemical, mineralogical, and petrological work by Dr. Anthony Mariano (1979, 1982, 2001), has shown the dominant tantalum bearing phase at Verity to be pyrochlore, although confined areas with valuable element concentration, including "massive concentrations" (Mariano, 1982) of ferrocolumbite, fersmite and pyrochlore, are noted.
A resource for the Fir Carbonatite has yet to be delineated by an independent third party, in accordance with National Instrument 43-101.
At the Fir Carbonatite, the dominant tantalum-bearing phase is ferrocolumbite with lesser pyrochlore in a ratio of approximately 20 : 1 (columbite : pyrochlore) (Mariano, 1982).

COLUMBITE (Iron Manganese Magnesium Niobium Tantalum Oxide)
The iron, manganese and magnesium amounts vary considerably without much effect on properties.
However the end members are recognized as distinct minerals although collectors have found this to be rather cumbersome and generally prefer columbite to the non-unique names of ferrocolumbite, manganocolumbite and magnocolumbite.
As mineral specimens, columbite can be a nice addition to one's collection.
