Ferromex, a contraction of Ferrocarril Mexico or "Mexican Railroad", is a private rail consortium that operates the largest railroad by mileage in Mexico.
Ferromex began operating on February 19, 1998, following the privatization of most of the government-owned railroads.
The Ferromex system operates over more than 8,500 kilometers of track and interconnects five major inland Mexican cities, five cities along the border with the United States, four seaports on the Pacific Ocean and one more on the Gulf of Mexico.

The other night, I observed an eastbound manifest train on the Chicago line with a Ferromex unit behind 2 NS D'9s.
I saw a FM unit headed west on Thursday June 17 unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me. It was an EMD unit but I didn't see what model it was but if this wasn't the same one you saw then maybe there's a chance there's more of them in the area.
I don't think FERROMEX is the Mexician rail line that's working with KCS.

Union Pacific Railroad and Ferrocarril Mexicano (Ferromex) announced a new, expedited, all-rail intermodal service offering seven-day transit between Los Angeles and the primary Mexican industrial centers of Guadalajara and Mexico City.
It is anticipated that additional U.S. and Mexican cities will be added to this new service in the near future.
This new service also will offer customers EMP container equipment and around-the-clock reservations, as Ferromex becomes the latest Mexican railroad to join the EMP program.

The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) and its Mexico City-based railroad partner Ferrocarril Mexicano (Ferromex) have re-routed their joint transborder intermodal service through El Paso Texas to improve freight transit times between major U.S./Canadian markets and Mexico.
Fort Worth, TX-based BNSF said this joint intermodal service would continue to target over-the-road truck freight moving between Guadalajara or Mexico City, in Mexico, and major North American markets -- including Southern California, Northern California, Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and major Canadian markets.
