Ferrocolumbite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This mineral was first found at Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut in New England, USA.
It forms a series with the tantalum-dominant analogue Ferrotantalite and one with the manganese-dominant analogue Manganocolumbite.
In 1925, German chemists Walter Noddack, Otto Berg and Ida Tacke reported the discovery of element 43 and named it masurium.

The inference of the southwestern continuation of the pegmatite system is supported by the presence of a genetically related swarm of tourmaline aplites, 0.3 to 3 m thick, that occur adjacent to the Pakeagama Lake pegmatite (see Figure 26.1).
The relationship of these aplite dykes to the Pakeagama Lake pegmatite is currently not understood due to a lack of U-Pb primary ages in pegmatites of the area.
However, its presence in aplites in association with ferrotantalite and manganotantalite at Locality 98FWB-34, as briefly described above in reference to the second field of columbite-tantalite mineral compositional variation, merits future exploration attention to such rock units as viable hosts for economic tantalum mineralization.

 Mineral Chemistry
Ferrocolumbite from the pluton is the least evolved of all columbite-tantalite examined from Separation Rapids (low Mn and Ta contents), consistent with it being the parent of at least the Fe-suite of pegmatites.
The Fe-suite include beryl pegmatites within and adjacent to the Separation Rapids pluton, where ferrocolumbite co-exists with ferrowodginite, and with increasing evolution into petalite-bearing pegmatites this is replaced by ferrotantalite and wodginite.
At Separation Rapids, the rare metal oxides follow two distinct evolution paths: (i) ferrocolumbite to ferrocolumbite + ferrowodginite to ferrotantalite + ferrowodginite to microlite group minerals (ii) manganocolumbite to manganocolumbite + wodginite to manganotantalite + wodginite to microlite group minerals.

Last September also saw the discovery of fine cassiterite specimens at Divino das Laranjeiras, Minas Gerais, Brazil-and it was Luis Menezes, again, who had the most ample supply of these, though a few other dealers had some too.
Very bright fl cassiterite crystals, rich in faces, form tight cyclic twins in ovoid shapes to 2.5 cm, and these perch on lustrous white albite matrix pieces to 20 cm across; tiny prismatic crystals of ferrotantalite may be found on a few specimens.
The cassiterite twins are never as large and dramatic as the best of their Chinese brethren, but the sparkling white albite matrix improves and distinguishes them aesthetically.

Obtained from: Tantalum is chiefly obtained as a by-product of tin processing, although it is also mined from the minerals columbite, tantalite and samarskite.
Other tantalum-bearing minerals include ferrotantalite, manganotantalite and microlite.
Tantalum and niobium are almost always found together, and are recovered from pegmatite veins in granite intrusions or from placer deposits.

The iron and manganese amounts vary considerably without much effect on properties.
However the two end members are recognized as distinct minerals although collectors have found this to be rather cumbersome and generally prefer tantalite to the non-unique names of ferrotantalite and manganotantalite.
Tantalite has a dimorphic relationship to another mineral called tapiolite.
