Down in the southwest corner of the state, a century of ferry service continues daily as needed to keep roadway traffic moving in the lower Delta for farmers, sportsmen, local residents and others of a pioneering breed who are not exactly faint-of-heart personalities.
The ferry crossings are free to the public and are not on a strict timetable schedule.
As the King's Point ferry enters its second century of service to this southern tip of Delta country, road superintendent Winans is very optimistic about the future of the ferry service there despite the other closings in Mississippi.

This ferry presumably located on Cooper Street, was later abandoned by Royden but continued in 1695 by Daniel Cooper and was to remain in the Cooper family for 150 year.
The extensive ferry system at these various points along the eastern shore of the Delaware River was the original impetus which resulted in the growth of a few small settlements which would later consolidate into the city known as Camden.
The "Coopers Point Hotel" or "Archers Hotel" which stood on State Street near Delaware Avenue was built by Samuel Cooper in 1770 and was the second ferry house erected at Cooper's Point.

Ferries had various styles of construction, but perhaps the most common type was a flat raft-like barge onto which a wagon or cart could be driven from the inclined stream banks.
In 1949 two ferries were in operation on the state-maintained highway system, one on State Highway 87 between Galveston and Port Bolivar with a twenty-five cent fee, and one on State Highway 146 at Morgan's Point, with no fee.

Ferry Point Partners, which includes golf superstar Jack Nicklaus and developers Jonathan Stern, Gagne, Paul Kanavos, and Dan Bythewood, subsequently signed the largest-ever city contract providing for the private operation of a municipal park facility.
Ferry Point Partners had already been working at the park for almost a year when a pending lawsuit from environmental groups challenging the legality of the deal apparently spurred the Franchise and Concession Review Committee to finally approve the deal at a special meeting on June 1, 2001.
The amount of debris that has been dumped at Ferry Point Park is worth close to $17 million in disposal fees at the rate of $675 per 30 cubic yards charged by Browning Ferris Industries, one of the city's biggest commercial waste hauling firms (which does not dump at the park).

The ferry, paid for with $250,000 in state grants, is expected to make runs carrying up to 49 passengers from Monitor Bay in Crown Point to Chimney Point, Vt., Port Henry Village Docks and Westport Marina.
It was built to resemble ferries that operated on Lake Champlain in the early part of the 20th century, until the Champlain Bridge at Crown Point was built in 1929.
Sail ferries operated on the lake as early as 1800 and as late as 1929, when the bridge opened.

Sailfish Point resident Allen Herskowitz, who rode out the storm at a friend's house across the Intracoastal Waterway in Sewall's Point, ground zero for the hurricane's eye, said the southern-most homes were saved by the dune.

One historian states that the Point Loma Ferry Co. was incorporated in 1895 with Captain Oakley J. Hall as skipper.
The Point Loma Ferry Company became the Star Boat Company in 1908 when Captain Hall purchased the name and properties, including the Boat House at the foot of H Street from Captain Elmer E. Lutz.
