Ferrymead was the birthplace of railways in New Zealand.
Ferrymead was where the first locomotive “Pilgrim” of 5 ft. 3 in.
Once the tunnel was opened, in 1867, Ferrymead rapidly declined and soon after was closed, thus being not only the first line open, but also, the first to close.

The Ferrymead Railway and the Canterbury Railway Society trace their heritage back to the 1940s when the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society was formed.
Located in Christchurch, the Society is a non-profit organisation that carries out a range of activities, including the operation of the Ferrymead Railway, the preservation of locomotives and rolling stock, the sale of publications and souvenirs, and the publication of a monthly newsletter for members.
The Ferrymead Railway is a living museum and in our photo gallery you'll be able to see many pictures of our locomotives, the rolling stock, our heritage train and photos from around our complex including the station houses, signal box, yard, workshops and sheds.

 Ferrymead Bays Soccer
At the Mainland Soccer awards night Ferrymead Bays was confirmed the top club in Canterbury when it won the Walker Cup for the best Overall Club performance for the first time in the clubs history.
Ferrymead went on to dominate the evening with Fred Simpson winning Coach of the year, Chris Sinclair Goal Keeper of the Year, Brent Archer Defender of Year, Darren Overton Youth Player of the Year, Clare Warner Striker of Year and Golden Boot, and the Women’s team the Best and Fairest team.
It was a fantastic night for Ferrymead Bays one which every member in the club can be proud of.

Ferrymead Bays player Aimee Phillips has been selected for the training squad for the inaugural U17 Woman’s World cup to be held in 2008.
Ferrymead are very proud of the success Aimee has achieved so far and look to seeing her on the World Stage in 2008.
On Sunday 19th February 2006, 12 of the Ferrymead Bays 13 Grade Players with their Coach Tom Davies and Club President Brian Dawes led out the All Whites at the Q E 2 Stadium in front of over 10,000 fans.

The line from Christchurch to Ferrymead was built first and on 1 December 1863 the first railway in New Zealand was opened.

It was transferred to Ferrymead by road and the following year it was fitted with another 4-71 engine and torque converter and became the Ferrymead Railway's light shunting locomotive under a lease agreement.
In 1988, in conjunction with the Ferrymead 125 (Rail 125) celebrations, Dg 2255 was overhauled and certified to main-line running standard, repainted in its original colour scheme and renumbered to its original number, Dg 772.
The Diesel Traction Group selected Di 1820 for preservation and she was transferred to the South Island in 1991, then on to the Ferrymead Railway.

Ferrymead Philatelic is the philatelic arm of the Ferrymead Post and Telegraph Historical Society which is one of the many historic organisations based at the Ferrymead Historic Park at 269 Bridle Path Road in Heathcote, Christchurch.
Ferrymead Philatelic which is owned and operated by the Historical Society has since 1977 produced a variety of philatelic souvenirs for sale through the Post office or by Mail Order.

 C 864 - Ferrymead Railway
C 864 is the largest Steam locomotive owned by the Canterbury Railway Society, who operate the Ferrymead railway, but by no means the largest to reside or run at Ferrymead.
After withdrawal in 1968, C 864 was preserved by the Canterbury Railway Society for their Ferrymead Railway.
For many years it was the main operating locomotive on the Railway, but due to higher running costs C 864 has only run on special days and on a few mainline trips, but the loco cannot be used on Toll Rail tracks again until it is re-tyred.

The Ferrymead Aeronautical Society is conserving a United States Navy R4D5, a military version of the twin engine DC3 transport.

 D 140 - Ferrymead Railway
After serving with the NZR, D 140 worked for Kempthorne Prosser, Hornby, until it was acquired by the Canterbury Society of Model Experimental Engineers, or CSMEE, who displayed the locomotive at their Spreydon Complex.
An attempt was made to have D 140 restored before the Rail 125 Celebrations in 1988, however D 140 was not restored in time, and restoration was discontinued after the celebrations.
D 140 was finally recomissioned on the 25th October 2003 at Ferrymead, as part of their Labour Weekend "140 Years of Ferrymead" Celebrations.

The Ferrymead Post and Telegraph Society Inc. was formed in 1977 and currently has some 80 members.
The Society’s headquarters, depicted below, are in Ferrymead Heritage Park, Christchurch New Zealand.

 Wd 357 - Ferrymead Railway
In 1987 the Ferrymead Railway made the decision to restore Wd 357 to full working order for the 'Ferrymead 125' celebrations which were to take place in October 1988.
A new spark arrestor was fitted, a new rear headstock and water tanks were fabricated also as the old ones were in poor condition.
Wd 357 was completed in time for the 125 celebrations, and has become a regular performer on trains at the Ferrymead Railway.

Built by Standard Motors and delivered to the RAF on 22nd October 1945, TE863 spent a short time with the Central Flying School at Hullavington, otherwise remaining in storage with No. 27 MU at Shawbury.
The Ferrymead Aeronautical Society looked at both aircraft in the early 1970's while looking for a fuselage to mate with the remains of NZ2382.
The airframe was in a very poor state and (allegedly) broke in two during the recovery process.

Here the Mosquito stayed until its remains, which included the fuselage, were acquired by the Ferrymead Aeronautical Society in 1972.

Ferrymead (The Meadow by the Ferry) is the name given to land on the south bank of the Heathcote river adjacent to the Estuary.
In 1964, the Heathcote County Council purchased the site of the first public railway station for use as a park and asked the Junior Chamber of Commerce to make recommendations for the development of the six acre property.
The Junior Chamber did this as its 21st anniversary project and a series of committees was set up to plan the various aspects of the site.
