Ferrysburg is located in northwestern Ottawa County on the shores of Lake Michigan just across the channel from Grand Haven, and adjacent to Spring Lake.
First called Ottawa Point in 1850, it was renamed after Reverend William M. Ferry, founder of Grand Haven, by his sons, Colonel Willian Montague Ferry and Thomas W. Ferry, in 1855.
Reverend Ferry originally came to the area in 1823 as a missionary, traveling around Lake Michigan all the way to the Straits of Mackinac.

He was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives 1850-1852 and a member of the Michigan State Senate in 1856.
Ferry was the first person from Michigan to have served in both houses of the Michigan State Legislature and in both houses of the United States Congress.
Ferry died in Grand Haven, Michigan, aged 69, and is interred in Lake Forest Cemetery.
