The Thyroid Gland - Iodine Source - Your resource for detoxified iodine.
Iodine is widely dispersed in rocks but the concentration is extremely low and even the leeching of iodine from soil over ages did not raise the ocean's concentration significantly.
The cause of goiter is lack of sufficient iodine in the soil and drinking water, or from inability to utilize iodine because of mercury toxicity from amalgam dental fillings and from mercury in immunizations.
Early fetal development is partly under the guidance of maternal thyroid hormones that have crossed the placenta, but it is theorized that the primitive cells at the beginning of fetal development still have the ability to make thyroid hormone themselves for their own use as in the early evolution of eukaryotes.

ORPHANET - About rare diseases - About orphan drugs
Foetal iodine syndrome is characterized by a group of symptoms that may be observed in a foetus or newborn when the mother was exposed during pregnancy to inappropriate (excessive or insufficient) amounts of iodine, a nonmetallic halogen element that was used in the past as a drinking water disinfectant.
In addition to the problems associated with iodine intoxication, iodine deficiency during pregnancy may be severe enough to produce hypothyroidism in the foetus.
The syndrome of arrested physical and mental development with deafness (cretinism) that results from this chronic hypothyroidism is a major challenge to public health, as it is the most prevalent correctable cause of brain damage in the world.

Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome - Texas Children's Fetal Center   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
For reasons that are not clear, in 15 percent to 20 percent of monochorionic, diamniotic twins, the blood flow through these blood vessel connections becomes unbalanced, resulting in a condition known as twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).
In addition to the findings of Stages I and II, careful study of the blood flow in the umbilical cord and fetal ductus venosus (the large blood vessel in the fetus that returns blood to the heart from the placenta) reveals abnormal patterns in Stage III.
Next, you will meet with or have a phone conversation with our fetal therapy coordinator who will be able to answer any further questions that you and your partner may have.

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is the leading cause of neonatal death throughout the developed world and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is responsible for the greatest mortality in the postneonatal period.
They calculated that maternal and hence fetal iodine deficiency was responsible for 101,800 stillbirths and 93,500 neonatal deaths, each year, in the region's eight member countries; the equivalent of 5.0 mortalities per 1000 live births.
