The passage of methyl mercury across the bloodbrain barrier is facilitated by an active transport mechanism, whereas the passage of ethyl mercury into the brain does not have such a transport system and is further hindered by its larger molecular size and faster decomposition.
Methyl mercury exposure has been reported to disrupt neuronal migration primarily in the motor cortex and in the cerebellar granule cell layer.
In 2 Iraqi infants exposed prenatally to methyl mercury there was a simplified gyral pattern, short frontal lobe, and reduction in white matter volume, along with derangement and lack of definition of the cortical layers and heterotopic neurons in cerebrum and cerebellum.

“Mercury binds to thiols in the tubulin [which are] the protein molecules that form microtubules in the neurons, and blocks depolorization and repolarization of the microtublules”.
The mercury reacts with sulfur to form mercuric sulfide, which coats the ingested metallic mercury and prevents the release of its vapor (U.S. If the amount of mercury in a thermometer is swallowed, it is slowly absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract and is not considered to pose a significant toxicologic risk (Klassen, C., D., 2001).
Mercury concentrations of the subjects were measured in blood and in urine, along with mercury concentrations in the workplace air.

Mercury is present in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients and only it is capable of inactivating the enzymes that protect neurons from destruction and producing the tangles and plaque deposits characteristic of the disease.
Mercury reduces the blood's ability to carry oxygen and, although fetal blood flow might be normal, the reduced oxygen content of the blood would parallel the hypoxic condition.
Mercury frequently has a stronger affinity for these binding sites than the normal activators; even though the hormone is present in the bloodstream, it may not be able to act as it is supposed to act.

Mercury inhibits sulfur ligands in MT and in cell membranes inactivates MT that normally bind cuprous ions(477), thus allowing buildup of copper to toxic levels in many people and malfunction of the Zn/Cu SOD function.

Both are bad news: methyl mercury stays in the blood longer than ethyl mercury, but ethyl mercury readily converts to inorganic mercury, which crosses the blood-brain barrier and remains in the brain much longer.
Granted, many vaccines no longer contain mercury, but because the FDA and CDC both refuse to agree to forbid the use of ethyl mercury as a preservative, if you do not check the package insert that comes with the vaccine in your doctor's office, you cannot be sure.
