Fetal minoxidil syndrome   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Minoxidil (LonitenĀ®) is a vasodilator used in the therapy of hypertension, usually in combination with a beta blocker and a diuretic.
Minoxidil use during human pregnancy has not been investigated in large cohort studies.
Postmarketing surveillance of the drug should be continued, but inadvertent exposure to minoxidil during pregnancy is not grounds for termination of pregnancy.

Happle syndrome is a genetic disease of bone and cartilage characterized by defective bone mineralization, telebrachydactyly, and facial dysmorphism with nasal hypoplasia.
The reduced fetal size appears to be related to increased vascular resistance in both the mother and the fetus and is a function of the length of exposure to the medication.
Fetal anomalies have most often been observed when high-dose parenteral therapy is used (eg, treatment of the mother for coccidioidomycosis meningitis).

Several case histories have suggested a phenotype for a fetal trimethadione syndrome of congenital malformations (1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7).
The incidence of fetal loss in these families was also increased compared with that seen in the general epileptic population.
Because trimethadione has demonstrated both clinical and experimental fetal risk greater than other anticonvulsants, its use should be abandoned in favor of other medications used in the treatment of petit mal epilepsy (8,9,10 and 11).

Yellow nail syndrome (triad of deformed yellow nails, lymphedema, and pleural effusion of unknown cause) is more predominant in females, as is pleural effusion associated with systemic lupus erythematosus.
Prevalence of fetal pleural effusion, with estimated incidence of 1 in 10,000-15,000 deliveries, is twice as common in males than in females.
Pleural effusions are relatively uncommon in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome; however, Kaposi sarcoma, bacterial pneumonia, and TB are among the most common causes of pleural effusion in this population.
