Many studies concerning Fethullah Gulen, the Turkish religious leader scholar and his movement have been published.
This article examines the role Gulen and his movement have played in moderating polarizations and eliminating radical tendencies in Turkish politics, and especially in the evolution of the Turkish Islamist movement towards adopting principles of secularism (in the meaning of separation of state and religion) and democracy.
Hakan Yavuz's article entitled, 'The Gulen Movement: The Turkish Puritans," which deals with the evolution of Gulen and his movement, is especially significant because of its critical approach to the movement.

Fethullah Gülen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fethullah Gülen is a former Islamic preacher, and the foremost leader of the "Nurcu" movement in Turkey.
Gulen's activities and outreach is unparalled in the history of the Turkish Republic, particularly because since its foundation the secular state was highly suspicous of popular religious leaders who act independent of the state apparatus.
Gulen became a highly controversial figure in 1997, when a number of videocassetes with his sermons were broadcast on the TV channels.

Gulen's reply: "The community that some refer to as the 'Fethullah Gulen community,' something that offends me as someone swearing at me, is a movement of volunteers, who willingly accept the idea and methods of serving this nation and humanity.
After Internet sites published the news reported by ANKA Agency the other day, Fethullah Gulen appeared live on STV News.main news program and answered questions posed to him.

FETHULLAH GULEN AND HIS LIBERAL "TURKISH ISLAM" MOVEMENT
Gulen is the sole leader of the movement and the hierarchical order extends from the top to the bottom through an increasing number of abiler (elder brothers).
Gulen's movement could be a model for the future of Islamic political and social activism.
Gulen also met with Bulent Ecevit, the long-time leader of Turkey's left and the current prime minister, after which Ecevit reported that their meeting involved a "conversation that focused entirely on religion and philosophy.

Others say these fears are unfounded, arguing that the Gulen community is a nonpolitical movement that only seeks to reconcile faith with secular institutions.
Gulen's views that science and religion are compatible are regularly discussed in "Sizinti," the community's scientific journal.
Despite Gulen's ties with leading secular politicians -- such as late president Ozal or former Prime Ministers Tansu Ciller and Bulent Ecevit -- many in Turkey's civilian and military establishments view him with suspicion and believe his ultimate goal is to pave the way for an Islamic regime run by the Shari'a.

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- There doesn't seem to be much separating the politics of secular Turkey's leaders and an Islamic-oriented movement built around a preacher, author and mystic scholar named Fethullah Gulen.
Gulen's main influence is Said Nursi, a warrior-scholar who fought to establish modern Turkey in 1923 but later claimed that the state limited religious freedom.
Gulen's ideas may increasingly enter the debate during a long and pivotal period for the Muslim world: EU membership talks with Turkey scheduled to begin in October.
