Fettercairn is a quiet village of red sandstone houses with a central square.
The village and distillery of Fettercairn are near the glen of the North Esk, a river that flows into the sea not far from the town of Montrose.
Fettercairn is claimed to be Scotland's second-oldest licensed distillery, reputed to have been founded in 1824.

Fettercairn is also home to a fine Church, built in 1803 and dedicated to St Martin.
This was erected in 1864, at a cost of £250, to celebrate an overnight stay in the village by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in September 1861.

Fettercairn, or Fetterie as it is affectionately known, is probably one of hte most picturesque villages in this area, set as it is about its central square.
Fettercairn Malt Whisky is a commodity much sought after by connoisseurs of a "wee dram" and today the distillery, which dates from 1824, has been beautifully refurbished and is now a popular tourist attraction.
Fettercairn has fairly extensive council housing schemes which are tucked in around the older part of the village, and many private houses have found sites beside the older houses and crofts which line the roads leading to the distillery, Marykirk, Luthermuir and the Clatterin' Brig.

During his residence at Fettercairn he did not confine his labours to his public ministrations in the pulpit, but visited from house to house, was the friend and adviser of all who were at the head of a family, and entered warmly into whatever regarded their interests.
They drew up a warning against the dangerous doctrines that he preached, and ordered it to be read publicly in the church of Fettercairn after sermon, and before pronouncing the blessing, by one of their own members, expressly appointed for that purpose on a specified day, which was accordingly done.
The presbytery of Fordoun seized this opportunity of gvatifying their spleen; they prohibited Mr Barclay from preaching in the kirk of Fettercairn, and used all their influence to prevent him from being employed, not only within their bounds, which lie in what is called the Mearns, but they studied to defame him in all quarters.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the village of Fettercairn had one surgeon, five flaxdressers, seven shopkeepers, 10 millers and 50 weavers.
When licensed distilling became more feasible after 1823, Fettercairn distillery’s founders came, if not in from the cold, certainly down from higher up the mountain where they had been part of the smuggling fraternity.
Fettercairn whisky was used in the Buchanan and Johnnie Walker blended whisky brands that had become so popular by the end of the century.

To the south west is 16th-century Balbegno Castle, a Ramsay stronghold, and the vitrified fort of Green Cairn.

About 1600 a Patrick Middleton moved from Fettercairn in the Howe of the Mearns to the farm of Gellan in Coull in the Dee valley, Aberdeenshire, and is probably the ancestor of the Middletons that populated Coull and surrounding parishes, including Birse, over the next 300 or more years.
A second cousin of mine living in Edzell, a short distance from Fettercairn where he was born and farmed, received one of the letters and gave him my email address.
We have corresponded over the last couple of years and with a one line note on an old family tree compiled by my great uncle about 1920 I was able to help him trace relatives that he did not know he had.

It was originally built by Sir Alexander Ramsey of Balmain, but he ruined himself in the process and sold the it to John Gladstone, a successful merchant from Leith, whose fourth son was William Ewart Gladstone, the future Prime Minister.
The forests hereabouts are very popular with walkers and cyclists and have a great range of forest habitats, from mature 100 year old trees and dense forest to wildlife ponds, and from long cycle trails to short walks and picnic areas.
Back in Fettercairn, its worth visiting the local distillery which is open for tours from May to September.

From the Bridge of Muick near Ballater, the Queen’s party had taken to ponies to cross the ancient track, the Mounth Road, which crosses the high shoulder of Mount Keen.
The party then dropped steeply down to Glen Mark and then went by a small carriage to reach Fettercairn which, the Queen noted in her diary, was forty miles from Balmoral.
