During the first decades of the seventeenth century the Feuillants of Italy detached themselves from those of France and set up the new Congregation of the Reformed Bernardines (1630), which eventually reestablished the connection with Citeaux.
However, every Feuillant returning to the Order was required to start another novitiate, indicating that the General Chapter did not even recognize them as Cistercians.
During the second half of the century, however, de Rancé's influence became preponderant in Orval and the abbey succeeded in organizing a small group of monasteries under her own direction (Conques, Lurich, Dilsselthal, Heisterbach and Beaupré).
