The slate-bearing strata of Festiniog [Ffestiniog] belong to the Ordovician or Lower Silurian systems, and are of an uniform soft blue-grey colour, although the North Vein or topmost bed shows a tendency to be slightly darker.
The chemical analysis of a standard Festiniog [Ffestiniog] slate shows silica 55 per cent., alumina 25 per cent., iron oxide 11 per cent., the remainder being composed of various elements of which the chief is magnesia.
The several slate deposits worked at Festiniog [Ffestiniog] are of considerable thickness, often from 150 ft. up to as much as 300 ft., measured on the horizontal, inter-stratified with beds of chert and other rocks of superior hardness to the workable slate.

Of 1ft 11½in gauge, the Ffestiniog Railway was opened as a horse-drawn tramway in 1836 to transport slate from the Blaenau Ffestiniog quarries to the harbour at Porthmadog, the horses hauling the empty wagons to the top of the line, then riding down on the 'Dandy' wagon at the rear of the train.
Using the Ffestiniog Railway and its links to the national network, it is possible to complete a figure-of-eight circumnavigation of Wales by rail, duplicating only a short piece of track between Shrewsbury and Craven Arms on the Marches Line.

Although the line averages a manageable 1% incline over its 13-mile profile from the sea at Porthmadog to 710 feet high at Blaenau Ffestiniog, there are some steep sections where the tiny engines are tested.

We were pulled to Porthmadog by the double ended Fairlie "David Lloyd George" and back to Blaenau Ffestiniog by "Linda".

Indeed, the original reason the spectacle glasses were made so large was so that the crew members could climb out through them should the loco fail in the Ffestiniog's 'long tunnel', where the clearances at the sides and top were measured in inches only.
The new Moelwyn Tunnel is quite a bit bigger, but clearances in places on the line are still very tight indeed.
In the 1920s the Ffestiniog was in such a state that it's a miracle that there weren't more tunnel failures than there were - a mixture of bad maintenance, poor coal, and a traffic manager who probably wasn't very competent.
