William Hague - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hague was born in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, a strongly working-class area, and caused a sensation at the age of sixteen by speaking at the Conservative party's 1977 national conference.
In 1997, Hague was elected leader of the Conservative Party in succession to John Major, in the hope that a fresh young face would counteract the public appeal of Tony Blair.
As Hague admitted on the morning of Labour's second landslide victory "we have not been able to persuade a majority, or anything approaching a majority, that we are yet the alternative government that they need." The Conservatives won only one more seat in the 2001 General Election than they had in the 1997 election.

Ffion Jenkins   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Ffion Hague (neƩ Jenkins) is the wife of William Hague, the former leader of the UK Conservative Party (1997-2001).
Mr Hague met her when he became Secretary of State for Wales in 1995 under the John Major's government.
Determined not to repeat the faux-pas of his predecessor, John Redwood, who was famously seen miming the words to the Welsh national anthem, Hague recruited a civil servant, Miss Jenkins, to help him learn the words.

WILLIAM HAGUE'S wife, Ffion, is taking a central role in efforts to mould her husband into a loveable and dynamic figure more able to convince voters that he has the qualities to be Prime Minister.
Ffion, who styles herself Miss Jenkins, was one of a handful of people who joined the Tory leader at a secret meeting of party strategists earlier this summer which devised the plan to present him in a new light.
The Hagues fly to the United States today for a holiday in Maine, where he intends to teach her to sail.

Ffion Hague will be protected during the forthcoming general election by a personal media adviser.
It has long been recognised that Oxbridge-educated Ffion Hague - who met her husband in 1995 when he was Secretary of State for Wales and she was his private secretary - plays an important role in her husband's life.
Two years ago, Mrs Hague became one of the youngest ever women to be appointed to the board of the British Council.

Independent, The (London): Profile.. Ffion Hague: Acceptable face of conservatism
Ffion's academic and career prowess and her inordinate self possession can obscure the fact that in the pitfall-strewn world of front-line politics, she is still on a learning curve.
Ffion, on the other hand, is younger, blamelessly moderate in her politics and carries her feminism light in the form of an uncomplicated belief that women can achieve what they want if only they put their minds to it.
Ffion was one of the few to ditch him before he could ditch her, sending a note which went: "Dear Darran, Sorry, I won't be going to the rugby with you on Saturday because I'm going with William Hague."

Perhaps it comes as little surprise when you consider that Ffion had refused to play the Tory wife (despite being titular patron of the Conservative Wives Association, her attendance at meetings is not high) beforehand.
From the moment Ffion stepped on the scene as Willies’s girl, wearing his ’n’ hers casual gear and matching baseball cap at the Notting Hill carnival, the British press decided she was just plain naFf.
So it is that we have a rather skewed image of Ffion as ‘that nice, demure Welsh girl (isn’t she in PR or something?), when she is far from it.

Ffion Hague, a newly appointed director at headhunting firm Hanson Green, said she planned to build on the company's record of placing 16 woman in 21 appointments in the last year.
Hague also weighed into the current debate on non-executive directors, saying it was a time for things to change in the way they are recruited and the way they are encouraged to make a contribution to the company.

Mr Hague's advisers are particularly frustrated because the focus groups, when asked what they think about the Conservative leader, describe him in terms that his friends regard as wholly inaccurate.
Mr Hague is so touchy about the focus group findings, which have shown no sign of improvement over recent months, that he decided that shadow cabinet members should be kept away from the evidence-gathering sessions.

Hague stresses populist causes in an apparent effort to bind up the party's core vote, a strategy that — not coincidentally — builds personal support for the leadership fight that an election defeat will almost certainly trigger.

 HELLO! First Ladies
Known as William Hague’s “secret weapon”, Ffion Hague has always been relied upon to add a touch of glamour to the rather dowdy image of the Leader of the Opposition.
Stylish, modern, professional and young — in fact, at 33, she is the youngest Tory leader’s wife in memory — she was even compared to Princess Diana when she first emerged on the public stage.
She obviously heeded the advice of a stress expert who warned political leaders before the general election that they could suffer burn-out unless they took their partners on the campaign trail with them.
