Fianchetto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In chess the fianchetto (/ˌfiən'kɛto/ Italian "little flanking") is a pattern of development wherein a bishop is developed to the second rank of the adjacent knight file, the knight pawn having been moved one or two squares forward.
The fianchetto is a staple of many "hypermodern" openings, whose philosophy is to delay direct occupation of the center with the plan of undermining and destroying the opponent's central outpost.
White's king's bishop is in a regular fianchetto, with the knight-pawn advanced one square and the bishop occupying the long diagonal.

Fianchetto Lines is rich on concrete analysis presented in an objective manner without any bias towards White or Black, and the well-organized material should serve the advanced player (rated 2000+) with an interest in these opening systems well.
Incidentally, the fianchetto Benoni lines enjoy a reputation quite similar to that of the fianchetto King’s Indian and Grünfeld: they are not considered the most dangerous system, but at the same time it can be difficult for Black to achieve an active game.
The chapter covering the fianchetto Grünfeld with 3…c6 is one of very few places in Fianchetto Lines, where I feel the coverage could have been more complete.

 Exeter Chess Club: The Fianchetto
This is part of the attraction of fianchetto systems: they are difficult and so grandmasters can hope for their GM opponents to go astray at some point.
Fianchettoes turn up frequently in closed Queen's-Pawn openings, and there is a Fianchetto Variation for White in each of the Indian Defences (semi-closed openings).
Reti and his contemporaries rejoiced in the fianchetto, arguing that you did not need to occupy the centre as White as long as you controlled it.

So games in which White fianchettoes at move eight and subsequently moves the Bishop to, say, f3 before Black has fianchettoed his Kingside Bishop at move twelve will not be found by the search.
And since the moves g2-g3 and Bf1-g2 must be played to accomplish the fianchetto, we can rule out the idea of a fianchetto occurring on the game's first move.
Returning yet again to our Bishop fianchetto, checking the "Sacrifice" box will cause the program to find all positions in which the fianchetto position is on the board while a sacrifice occurs somewhere on the chessboard.

In chess, what is meant with "fianchetto"? - Answerbag.com
In chess the fianchetto (Italian "little flanking") is a pattern of development wherein a bishop is developed to the second rank of the adjacent knight file, the knight pawn having been moved one or two squares forward.
In Italian, fianchetto is pronounced with a hard k sound as in "cat", but many English-speaking chess players mispronounce this word with a ch sound as in "church".
A move popularized by Russians, the Bishop is placed onto one of the long diagonals: the b2 or g2 squares for white, and the b7 or g7 squares for fl.

Mark Lowery's Exciting World of Chess - The Bishop-5
One obvious drawback is that a fianchettoed Bishop becomes restricted in its potential mobility because it is situated on a long diagonal, and can only move to two squares along the second shortest diagonal on the board.
In doing so and foregoing developing the Bishop through the center diagonals of the board, a player may later harm his or her ability to provide defense and protection for other developed pieces such as the Knights.
If the opposing King castles to the side where the Bishop is attacking along the long diagonal, it is positioned for a possible Bishop-Queen Battery aimed at checkmating the castled opposing King in the corner of the board.

Instead of mimicking white’s play, fl is going to slow the response knowing the plan is to fianchetto on fl queen’s side of the board.
White’s next move is to move king’s bishop to center board to promote the castling and threaten fl, therefore, expect white king’s bishop to b5.
Play the fianchetto from king and queens side: make this seldom-used play an integral part of your s l o w defensive strategy and you will eventually control the field of battle — the board.

The fianchetto variation, 3.g2-g3, against the KID is a solid choice for a player who prefers positional play over sharp variations, where Black throws forward his pawn mass on the Kingside.
In this system, White takes less space in the center at first, than in the classical variation for example, but he builds a bullet proof position on the King’s side and plans to expand in the center later.
The placement of a Queen’s pawn is a main difference between the fianchetto King’s Indian and the English.

Hexapedia - Fianchetto (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.isi.jhu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
In chess openings, the fianchetto is a pattern of development wherein a bishop is developed to the second rank of the adjacent knight file, the knight pawn having been moved one square forward.
The reasons are that it weakens the pawn structure, especially in case the king castles on the side of the fianchetto; it wastes a tempo in pushing the knight pawn; and it usually means giving up control of the center.
The fianchetto is a staple of most "modern" openings, whose philosophy is to relinquish control of the center in the hope of later undermining the opponent's overextended pawn structure.
