Fianna Fáil traces its roots to 1916 but its tradition was also influenced hugely by the 1918 election victory of Sinn Féin, the Civil War and the decision in 1926 to abandon abstentionism and the gun and participate fully in democratic politics.
In 1932 Fianna Fáil was elected to power for the first time and ever since has been the biggest party in the State and the dominant party of government.
It was a restatement of the Fianna Fáil claim to be the true inheritors of the Rising.

Fianna Fail also embodies a great deal of experience in subordinating the working class to the needs of Irish-based capital through manipulation of the patriotic sentiment that is a residual legacy of Ireland’s former colonial oppression by Britain.
This presents problems for Fianna Fail, which is under increasing pressure now that Sinn Fein has established itself as an all-Ireland party and claims to be an opponent of the social inequality that successive Fianna Fail and PD governments have created.
It is also difficult for Fianna Fail to claim to be implementing the US and British-backed Good Friday Agreement, which aims at creating a more stable basis for business investment across the entire island by integrating Sinn Fein into the Northern Ireland state apparatus, while sustaining the coalition with the PDs.

In 1932 the Fianna Fail won control of the government and de Valera became Prime Minister.
Fianna Fáil, he said, would repeal the Constitution (Amendment) Act and abolish the Military Tribunal, thereby destroying the safety it had given to the Citizens; and Fianna Fáil would be unable to deal with gunbullies, who, before the passing of the Act, were ready to rob, loot and domineer their neighbourhoods.
Should Fianna Fáil be returned to power, they would first proceed to abolish the Oath, and the next step in their programme would be the amendment of the Constitution, and that would entail further appeals to the country, and nothing would have been done for its advancement.'
