Fiat Croma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fiat Croma is an automobile from Italian manufacturer Fiat, produced in two distinct generations, one built from 1985 to 1996, and the other one since 2005.
The Croma was a five-door hatchback, although its body resembled a sedan, and the design was the responsibility of Giorgetto Giugiaro.
In 2005, Fiat announced a large hatchback with an upright tailgate, reminiscent of that of the Fiat Stilo, resurrecting the Croma nameplate.

Fiat Auto’s distinctive new executive car thus combines the load space and versatility of an estate with the commanding driving position and spacious passenger accommodation of an MPV, whilst offering the superior driving dynamics of a conventional saloon.
The new Fiat Croma’s equipment specification has been carefully considered to simplify and enhance life on board, with ABS, seven airbags, (two more are optional), remote central locking and tailgate release, electric windows throughout, air conditioning, a 6-speaker CD player, and alloy wheels fitted as standard across the entire range.
The new Fiat Croma also offers the full range of braking, traction control and stability systems available today: ABS anti-lock brakes complete with electronic brakeforce distribution, ASR to limit wheel slip during acceleration, MSR to modulate engine torque whilst changing down, and a sophisticated ESP to control stability during sudden changes in direction.

The suspension on the Fiat Croma was designed to achieve the highest possible levels of comfort and handling, with MacPherson struts at the front and 4-link Multilink suspension at the rear, and comfort is excellent on all types of surface.
The Fiat Croma is made all the more enjoyable by the optional large opening sunroof (approximately 1.5 m2); this sunroof covers up almost the entire area of the roof and comprises two glass panels: a fixed rear panel and an electrically opening front panel.
It was here that Fiat decided to invest in technology and quality for the Fiat Croma, developing an innovative manufacturing model specifically for the new car, based on a balanced mix of advanced automation and human intervention to control the quality which supports the technology on the Fiat Croma.

 New Fiat Croma - newstreet.it
The new Fiat, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and produced in the Cassino plant, borrows its name from the historical model that became a benchmark for medium-high range saloons from 1985 to 1994 and sold more than 450,000 units.
The Croma has been created to respond to the needs of European society in which the trend of the moment is leading new families to pay more attention to the substance of things and, therefore, to look for safety and reliability in a product: and everything at accessible prices.
The New Croma can be fitted with no fewer than 5 types of gearbox to exploit the performance of its new engines to the full: in brief, all the petrol engines come with a 5 speed gearbox with an option to fit an automatic sequential gearbox on the 2.2 16v.

 Motoring - Fiat's luxury 3-in-1 Croma driven
Fiat says there's 900 mm between the rear seat backs and the front seats, which is a lot of legroom - plenty, from our observation - while headroom from the squab to the roof is 1 011 mm., again, plenty.
Fiat claims 11.5 litres/100 km in the urban cycle, 7 litres/100 km in the out-of-town cycle and 8.6 litres/100 km in the mixed cycle.
Fiat has made steady progress in the past two years, changing from a "cheap" car maker into one which embraces a wide variety of models and model segments, and now including commercial vehicles, too.

Thus the "new large" Fiat, as it was known within the company prior to its launch, is able to claim usefulness above that of the old Croma, which was simply a big hatchback with a particularly floppy body structure.
Fiat says it has engineered in a "Fiat feel", but this isn't the eager, revvy feel of the small cars for which Fiat is famous.
But the three diesels are Fiat's own: 1.9 MultiJets of 120bhp (with eight valves) or 150bhp (with 16 valves) are in the range from launch, and the potent 2.4-litre, five-cylinder, 20-valve unit that, like the others, also powers the imminent Alfa 159, arrives later in the year.

Indeed the last Croma — a car launched 20 years ago and built on the same platform as the Alfa 164, Lancia Thema and Saab 9000 — was a quite startlingly undesirable car and, sadly, so is this one.
Despite a reasonable arsenal of attributes which we’ll come to in a minute, I struggle to see many people who have the choice between the Croma and all the other cars that might be put forward as rivals, thinking that, of them all, the Fiat’s the one that’s going to set their heart pumping fastest.

 4Car Feature - Fiat Croma - from Channel 4
The Croma shares the Vectra's 2700mm wheelbase rather than the Signum's longer one, but it has more rear space than the Vectra (and pretty much everything else in the class) thanks to a higher rear seat and a more-reclined rear backrest.
The manual seat adjustment is less impressive, with the recline wheel awkward to reach, and the steering wheel is too high and far away for some tastes even at the limits of its adjustment.
If we in the UK can no longer have Lancias, the Croma's cabin gives a hint of what we are missing - it's a good-looking environment made all the more visible by the panoramic glass roof.

THE VERDICT: FIAT CROMA 2.2 DYNAMIC: Independent, The (London) - Find Articles
Fiat's most recent effort in this sector was the 1986 Croma, a product of the Swedish-Italian cooperative effort that also gave rise to the well- regarded Alfa Romeo 164, Lancia Thema and Saab 9000; unfortunately, none of the magic of those two has ever really rubbed off on their Fiat sister model.
Fiat appears to be taking the same approach; although the Croma name doesn't have much cachet, the company has stuck with it for this new large model, and seems to be banking on curious customers who take a second look being pleasantly surprised as well.
On the road, the 2.2-litre petrol engine made a reasonable job of moving the Croma along smoothly and quickly, but it would also be worth considering the versions fitted with Fiat's impressive diesel units.
