Essentials: Working with Fibreglass   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
Fibreglass is a form of synthetic or man-made mineral fibre.
Binding resins and oils are used during the manufacture of fibreglass insulation to stiffen and bond the fibres together and to prevent them from becoming airborne.
Handling continuous fibreglass filament before it is bonded into hardened plastics does not usually generate sufficient dust or airborne fibres to cause even short term irritation.

 Interlux Fiberglass Prep
Fibreglass Surface Prep is a mould release agent remover which precludes the need for sanding bare GRP when used with International's Fibreglass No Sand Primer or Interspeed Aqua.
Fibreglass Surface Prep thoroughly cleans the gelcoat and provides a key for Fibreglass No Sand Primer or Interspeed Aqua to be applied.
For the full shelf life of Fibreglass Surface Prep to be realised ensure that between use the container is firmly closed and the temperature is between 5°C/40°F and 35°C/95°F. Keep out of direct sunlight.

 fibreglass
Glass that has been formed into fine fibres, either as long continuous filaments or as a fluffy, short-fibred glass wool.
Fibreglass is heat- and fire-resistant and a good electrical insulator.
It has applications in the field of fibre optics and as a strengthener for plastics in GRP (glass-reinforced plastics).

CFS Fibreglass Supplies: Applying the laminate
Once the fibreglass has been ‘wetted out’ it is necessary to consolidate the two layers of fibreglass and this is done using a metal roller.
Unless the corners are radiused do not attempt to take the fibreglass around the corner since it is difficult to “persuade” fibreglass to lay into right angled bends, start again with a built in overlap.
Since there will be a butt joint at the corner it is then recommended that a strip of fibreglass some 200mm is cut with the edges frayed out and then applied as a tape would into the corner.

 Q&A 6 - Fibreglass & other coatings
Using G4 on the render before fibreglassing is a deluxe way of doing it, but of all the ponds fibreglassed in our club (over 15) none have done this.
For the fibreglassing we use a person who lives just south of Birmingham, and the cost of fibreglassing is not much more than just buying the G4.
Although the fibreglass forms its own skin the walls and foundations have to be reasonable strong enough to support the weight, but of course small cracks will not affect the fibreglass as it would with a pond coated with G4.

Fibreglass: a carcinogen that's everywhere   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-19)
Fibreglass is now used for thermal insulation of industrial buildings and homes; as acoustic insulation; as fireproofing; as a reinforcing material in plastics, cement and textiles; in automotive components; in gaskets and seals; in filters for air and fluids; and for many other miscellaneous uses.
The finding that fibreglass causes diseases similar to asbestos was chilling news in the early 1970s, and an additional 25 years of research have not made the problem seem less serious.
Workers in fibreglass manufacturing plants are exposed to concentrations of fibres far lower than the concentrations to which asbestos workers were exposed, yet several industry-sponsored epidemiological studies of fibreglass workers in the US, Canada, and Europe have reported statistically significant increases in lung cancer.

Fibreglass Fishing Rod History - Flyfishing
Fibreglass (the patented spelling is actually 'fiberglas') and resins were known and used at the turn of the century, but it was actually the result of military research that the material was found to be suitable for fishing rods.
The process used to make the first fibreglass blanks was named after our bamboo repair man, and called the 'Howald Process." It differed from more modern fibreglass blank construction in that fiberglass yarn, saturated with resin, was wound in a spiral direction around a steel mandrel.
High quality glass blanks were eventually made using fibreglass cloth that had been treated with chrome, and the resin impregnated directly into the cloth.

 tipperography: Fibreglass me.
And the reason it was simple to get a fibreglass cast is because it is classified as a “medical device”, along with many other items such as crutches, hearing aids, walkers, etc. (for very many etc.’s) and therefore not included as part of “free” healthcare services.
I’m not suggesting that there is huge markup on fibreglass casts and crutches, but I also think that $30 is significantly more than the roll of fluorescent orange (Boy’s choice) fibreglass tape and the time of the casting technician.
So given that fibreglass casts probably have some kind of profit (eewww) margin that could be used to pay for other hospital expenses, the good folks at the fracture clinic would love for us to have one.

The MIRAFLEX fibreglass, kindly sent us by its manufacturer, with an accurate documentation, because of its look and its tactile aspect had to wait for long before being esteemed, as it was mistaken for a simple padding material.
The surprise was indescribable when, once the documentation was verified, we apprehended that this soft material, extremely squeezable, was pure 100% fireproof fibreglass, produced and used as an insulating material.
The MIRAFLEX fibre, as Owencorning, its manufacturer, enlightens, represents an absolute novelty in the fibreglass field because it is made of two different kinds of fibreglass, that, when joined turn into a soft fibreglass wadding.

 Garden fountain fibreglass features
A modern fibreglass garden fountain is extremely strong but very lightweight.
The degree of realism in a fibreglass garden fountain is now indistinguishable from the “real” thing when products from the leading manufacturers are chosen.
The best fibreglass features are made in such a way that the realistic appearance is created by the use of natural aggregates or stone built into the product and not just applied to the surface.

Its not by accident that the tricky bits of a locost are fibreglass, and that so much of the kit car and low volume vehicle market use it.
If you are going to self-colour the fibreglass parts to avoid spraying them, then your work has to be a really high standard as what comes out the mould is what you are gonna have to live with.
The fibreglass will not be easy to get in small diameter areas, and may make life harder getting it out of the mould.

We were told that in the USA, the fibreglass carpets are glued straight to the concrete, whereas here in Australia we stretch our carpets over thick underlay and nail or staple the carpet to the floor.
In addition, fibreglass backing was much better for cleaning purposes with deep stains.
Our main concern is that if the fibreglass carpet is laid on a cool day, the carpet will wrinkle and bubble in the summer when it gets very hot due to the fibreglass naturally expanding.

 Fibreglass Fronts
Morris Garages has owned a fibreglass 'tilt front' mould since 1982, which not many people knew about until very recently, when we started receiving enquiries for these from the USA.
Australia is a very limited market for this type of product, and we have been surprised that we have sold more of these to the USA in the last two years than in Australia since the mould was first produced in 1979.
Our fibreglass fronts are quality products that are manufactured to a very high standard by a local firbreglass specialist, who has been making our fibreglass products since the mid 1980's.
