  Fichtelgebirge - LoveToKnow 1911
FICHTELGEBIRGE, a mountain group of Bavaria, forming the centre from which various mountain ranges proceed, - the Elstergebirge, linking it to the Erzgebirge, in a N.E., the Frankenwald in a N.W., and the Bohmerwald in a S.E. direction.
The inhabitants are employed chiefly in the iron mines, at forges and blast furnaces, and in charcoal burning and the manufacture of fling from firewood.
Although surrounded by railways and crossed by the lines NurembergEger and Regensburg-Oberkotzau, the Fichtelgebirge, owing principally to its raw climate and bleakness, is not much visited by strangers, the only important points of interest being Alexandersbad (a delightfully situated watering-place) and the granite labyrinth of Luisenburg.

Rather than labouring this question, let us enjoy the wonderful, scent filled and maintained beauty of these farming gardens, found all over the “Fichtelgebirge”.  Out the outset, these field gardens were in fact kitchen gardens, which later due to aesthetic reasons were extended with flower gardens.
The meaning given to these gardens in earlier times, can be accredited to the “Capitulare de Villis”, a decree ordered by Carl the Great in 795.   Almost all of the plants listed in this document, can still be found today in our farm and house gardens.
For those leisurely travelling through the “Fichtelgebirge” with eyes open, many such garden beds can be found along the way, true jewels to be enjoyed.
