Floydian Slip(tm) : The Pink Floyd Experience > Albums > Nick Mason > Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports
Drummer Nick Mason spent some of his time between Pink Floyd's 1979's "The Wall" and 1983's "The Final Cut" involved with a project that resulted in "Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports" album, a mostly oddball collection of experimental pop, rock and jazz, released in 1981.
The project easily could have been called "Carla Bley's Fictitious Sports." It was Bley who wrote all of the album's numbers, played keyboards throughout and co-produced the effort with Mason.
"Fictitious Sports" was produced at Grog Kill Studio in Willow, N.Y., in October 1979.

When the show about a fictitious cable sports network debuted last fall, it couldn't have gotten off to a less auspicious start.
Sports Night's first few outings were lackluster, but there was something -- a spark of ingenuity, a dash of cleverness -- that kept the long knives sheathed and the TeeVee jackals at bay.

There was an episode of the short-lived sitcom Sports Night -- which followed a fictitious cable sports network -- where the show's leading characters had to debate how to cover a news story involving one of its reporters.
Without hashing out the entire plot, the climax of the episode came when Danny, one of the anchors of the SportsCenter knockoff, shot down the rationale behind proceeding with the biggest interview in network history simply because it was the wrong thing to do.

Sports Night was every bit as good as its political successor--and in some ways, even better--even though it didn't have the gravitas of, say, running the country on a daily basis.
Continuous action is very expensive to shoot as it requires the sets to be contiguous, the lighting to be in place for all the places the camera will move to, and most importantly all the actors and camera and sound people have to avoid mistakes for the duration of the scene.
In general, Sports Night is more romantic than its successor: not in terms of love (although that too), but in the sense of breaking the rules--and it does that in many ways.

In no attempt to take any credit away from the enthusiasm and spectacular drumming of Pink Floyd's Nick Mason, I must acknowledge that a more propper title would be "Carla Bley's Fictitious Sports;" it was Bley whose creative writing and oddball soul of music give this album its superb feel.
By combining funky melodies and tunes, out of this world lyrics, and a knack for a very unique style of complexity (in tradition not arrangement), Carla Bley demonstrates her ability to make a song feel so good it doesn't matter that "Fictitious Sports" didn't make the top 150 in the album charts.
