Fidelio is an opera in two acts by Beethoven.
This representation, under the original title "Fidelio," was preceded by the well-known Fidelio overture, the fourth written by the composer for the opera.
Leonore, his faithful wife, suspects that Pizarro has captured him, and, disguised as a youth under the name of Fidelio, she enters the service of Rocco, the jailor of the States prison of which Pizarro is the governor.

Fidelio, or Conjugal Love, an opera in three acts freely adapted from the French by Joseph Sonnleithner, was first performed on 20 November 1805, in the Theater an der Wien.
Fidelio was laid aside for many years until it was revived at the Kärtnertor Theater on 23 May 1814.
Fidelio was for Beethoven a child of sorrow.

Fidelio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fidelio, who is Leonore in disguise, enters carrying a heavy load of newly repaired chains.
Certainly, Fidelio is not an opera in the sense we are used to, nor is Beethoven a musician for the theater, or a dramaturgist.
His Fidelio has more of the Mass than of the Opera to it; the sentiments it expresses come from the sphere of the sacred, and preach a 'religion of humanity' which we never found so beautiful or necessary as we do today, after all we have lived through.

 Fidelio - Beethoven
The subject of the opera was derived from Bouilly’s "Leonore; or, Conjugal Love." It had already been used for a French opera comique, as well as for an opera, to Italian works, by Paer, a composer who accompanied Napoleon to Warsaw and Posen, and in 1807 was formally installed as his maitre de chapelle.
Pizarro, the governor of a State prison in Spain, entertaining a bitter enmity against the Don Florestan, a nobleman, seizes and confines him in a loathsome dungeon with the intention of starving him to death.
Beethoven wrote "Fidelio" in the full maturity of his creative powers, and it stands alone among operas, with great and peculiar qualities of its own.

 Fidelio  -  Ludwig van Beethoven
If Fidelio is not the finest argument that opera transcends the sum of its parts, what is? The story has a ridiculous premise: a woman, whose husband has been unjustly kidnapped by a prison commandant, disguises herself as a boy and takes a job assisting the jailer.
The two jailers, Rocco and Fidelio, enter to dig the grave, and Pizarro attempts murder – only to be thwarted by Fidelio-Leonore, who reveals herself at last, and by a trumpet call signaling the arrival of the royal Minister.
The new staging is vaguely contemporary, the prisoners in white pajamas, the guards in modern uniforms, Pizarro, Rocco and Don Fernando in suits and ties, the women (Marzelline and the chorus in the final scene) in drab flowered dresses that recall the ’30s, or perhaps Iron Curtain countries.
