A field camera is a (Click link for more info and facts about view camera) view camera that can be folded in a compact size.
Field cameras as they are known today originate from the early interlocking box cameras of the 19th century.
At some point the wooden box was substituted by bellows to reduce the bulk of the cameras and facilitate the transport and use of cameras outside of studio settings.

One of the camera`s that I have been considering is the Toyo 45 CF (Carbon Fibre) which weighs a mere 1.65 Kg, although the weight is not an important factor.
Field cameras usually have a pretty limited bellow draw although some of the wooden flat bed cameras sometimes have full swings and tilts plus a double extension bellows.
For field use, a monorail camera can be quite clumsy to carry around so flat bed and field cameras tend to be more useful.

Compared to cameras intended for studio use, field cameras generally have some compromises in performance, possibly including non-geared movements, less precision, less rigidity, etc. There is still a wide range of capabilities among the various models of field camears.

Camera calibration gives us the geometric relation between the 3D coordinates of a point in the world and the 2D (pixel) coordinates of its image in a camera of the array.
We found it was easy to meet these criteria with a straightforward extension of [1] to multiple cameras.
The only parameters this ray depends on are the 12 parameters or the camera, and the 6 representing the pose of the calibration grid.

I have a monorail camera for most of my 4x5 photography, but the Crown Graphic seemed to be a fine option for times when it is impractical to pack a monorail.
This is a major inconvenience in the field but, on the bright side, it does eliminate one source of dust entering the camera.
Nevertheless, the camera's disadvantages as a field camera must be discussed so potential users are aware of them and recognize them in advance.

 Field Camera vs. View Camera
All such cameras might be called "view cameras" by the way, and a lightweight monorail camera is considered by some to be a "field camera," so it's clearer to distinguish between them by calling them "flatbed" and "monorail" cameras.
I think it would be well to start with a relatively inexpensive camera, find out all its weaknesses and strengths, then look for a camera that suits your personal needs, selling the first along the way unless you should discover that you really like it, which is a possibility.
The least expensive cameras that I think of as "learner" 8" X 10" types, were both made by Burke and James, the B&J View, a flatbed (be sure that it comes with an extension rail, many have been separated along the years) and the "Grover", a monorail.

WIRO Wide-Field Infrared Camera   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
The traditional approach to infrared camera design is to place the camera at the Cassegrain focus of the telescope and include reemerging optics within the camera to change the effective focal length of the system.
Since the camera will operate at infrared wavelengths all the components much be cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) in order to minimize the thermal background of the camera.
However, since the camera is mounted at prime focus, and hence located within the incoming beam of the telescope, it must also be designed to be as compact as possible.

The camera allows for nitrogen flushing so that the volume between the emulsion and filter is filled with dry nitrogen during the exposure, thus guarding hypersensitized plates against degradation.
