Topic: Field recording

Field recording - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A "field recording" is the actual recording that is produced by the documenter/artist.
Field recordings are usually recorded on portable devices which utilize DAT (Digital Audio Tape) or completely digital (hard disk/Flash) technology, to reproduce an exact audio replica, or soundscape.
Field recording was originally a way to document oral presentations and ethnomusicology projects (pioneered by Charles Seeger and John Lomax), but recently it has been expanded to become avant-garde roots for ambient and experimental music.

Recordings of their voices provide important baseline data for research in the fields of avian systematics, behavior, and bioacoustics, and are essential to conservation initiatives as training and playback tools for surveys and censuses.
For analog recorders the signal-to-noise ratio of the recorded sound is maximized with respect to inherent noise produced by the tape and components of the recorder itself.
For digital recorders, recording at an optimal level on tape ensures that signals are recorded at or near the maximum bit rate (16-bit in modern 16-bit digital recorders).

Field Recording / Sound Art documenting the world around us through sound.
This part of my site focuses on field recordings which can be released on their own or edited into sound art collages, soundscapes, processed and morphed into alien worlds, or whatever your creative mind comes up with.
The point of this kind of field recording (as I see it) is to capture an audio snapshot of what's going on around us in a way that tells a story to the listener (and the recording doesn't have to be made outside in a field either).
Recorded with my right side facing the truck and to my left side is a walled in walkway where the reflected sound bounces around.

Although standard analog audiocassette tape continues to be a viable medium for recording interviews, there are many advantages to using digital audio recording equipment.
Two factors that have the greatest impact on the quality of a digital audio recording are the bit depth and sampling rate of the digital audio file.
However, for the sake of creating recordings that balance quality with file size, we recommend creating files that are 16 bit, with a sampling rate of 44.1kHz in mono.
