 Baseball
Baseball is thought to be a direct descendant of cricket, rounders, and town ball, though the game's origins are uncertain.
In its usual form, the game of baseball is played between two teams of nine players at a time on a playing field consisting of four bases, arranged in a diagonal square ("the diamond") and a large outfield extending from two adjacent sides of the diamond.
The center fielder has more territory to cover than the other two outfielders, so he must be very fast and agile, and must have a strong arm to throw balls in to the infield; as a result, teams tend to emphasize defense at that position.

"Obstruction" by a fielder attempting to field a ball should be called only in very flagrant and violent cases because the rules give him the right of way, but of course such "right of way" is not a license to, for example, intentionally trip a runner even though fielding the ball.

 Bambooweb: Left fielder
A left fielder, abbreviated LF, is an outfielder in the sport of baseball who plays defense in left field.
Of all outfielders, the left fielder often will have the weakest arm, as they generally do not need to throw the ball as far in order to prevent the advance of any baserunners.
The left fielder still requires good fielding and catching skills, and tends to receive more balls than the right fielder due to the fact that right-handed hitters, which are much more common, tend to "pull" the ball into left field.

 Diamond Mind Baseball
Baseball analysts, ourselves included, have made many attempts to devise methods that deal with some of these other factors so that we can isolate the contribution the player is making.
And suppose one center fielder reaches a ball but muffs it for a one-base error, while another lets it go up the gap for a double -- the guy who reached the ball has.20 fielding runs deducted and the second guy isn't penalized at all.
That means that someone playing next to a weak fielder tends to look worse than he is, because if the other guy makes the play, there is no opportunity charged, but if the ball falls in, it costs him a half of one.

 Baseball Coaching: Outfield Communication
When the ball is in the air the center fielder has authority over every other fielder on the field with the left and right fielders next.
If you're the left fielder and you're running towards the ball in the left field gap, you want to make sure you make a call for the ball as soon as you're comfortable that you can make an easy catch.
If on the other hand he gets a confirmation back from the center fielder, "You got it" or "Yours", then he can be confident that he is going to field the ball without risk of colliding with the center fielder.
