Fielding L. Wright - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fielding L. Wright's run as vice-presidential candidate was largely a protest against the nomination of President Truman and the inclusion of civil rights proposals in the Democratic Party platform.
In 1943 Wright was elected Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi.
Wright's strong stand on hotly debated issues such as racial segregation, civil rights and state's rights, combined with the advantages of incumbency, won his re-election as the 50th Governor of Mississippi in 1947.

 Governors of Mississippi
Better known as “Dixiecrats,” the Southern Democrats nominated Governor Fielding L. Wright of Mississippi for vice-president and Governor J. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina for president.
Wright, who was born into a political family at Rolling Fork, Mississippi, on May 16, 1895, vowed as a returning World War I veteran that he would never become a “dang politician.” After studying law at the University of Alabama and reading law with an uncle, Governor Wright opened a law office in Rolling Fork.
As lieutenant governor, Wright was the presiding officer of the Mississippi Senate and became one of only two men in the 20th century to chair both houses of the legislature – Sam Lumpkin of Tupelo, lieutenant governor during the Wright administration, was the other.

 Opinion - The Clarion-Ledger
South Carolina's Gov. Strom Thurmond (and later the nation's longest serving United States Senator) was the States' Righters' candidate for president and Mississippi's Gov. Fielding L. Wright their vice-presidential nominee.
This was the platform on which Thurmond and Wright were nominated as the Dixiecrats' standard-bearers.
It's eerily poetic that the same Strom Thurmond who was a central figure in the 1948 political drama that helped give birth to a strong Republican Party in the South a half century later would unwittingly become the focal point in the downfall of Sen. Trent Lott, one of the GOP's most powerful Southern leaders.

thirdspace 5/1- Bennett: Resurrecting our foremothers
Every day now, however, I am astonished to find just how many women who were prominent in their own time, in any and every field of endeavour, have very nearly disappeared from history, and have only been rescued by historical research of the past couple of decades.
Before beginning my current research, on women’s history in London in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, I had absorbed the general ‘pop history’ view that women in the past were the ‘angels in the house’ of Victorian times, or the frustrated housewives of Betty Friedan.
Any reader can be excused for not having heard of Isabella Whitney, who was (very likely) in her own time widely known as the “Sapho” (sic) of London (Lyne, 2004, para 2); her best surviving work is a wonderful poetical travelogue of the city, its shops, its jails, its streets.
