Susan Koerner Wright (1831-1889), mother of aviators Wilbur and Orville Wright, was born in Virginia in 1831.
Reuchlin Wright, the eldest brother of aviators Wilbur and Orville Wright, was born on the family's farm in Grant County, Indiana on March 17, 1861.

The Wright Memorial Committee also contacted the landscape architecture firm Olmsted Brothers in regards to planning "a suitable enclosure and approaches to this marker [that Borglum was designing]." The committee had retained one acre at the Huffman Prairie Flying Field from Torrence Huffman for the location of the memorial.
The subjects of the four plaques are the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, the names of early aviators, the contribution of Wright Field, and the prehistoric mounds located on the memorial grounds.
The Wright Flyer III was reconfigured in 1908 and flown at Kitty Hawk prior to the demonstration flights in France and Ft. Myer.

McCook Field served as the logistics center for the first flight around the world in 1924, and three of the personnel involved in the flight, two pilots and one mechanic, were from McCook.
As the dedication program for Wright Field explained, "The further development and improvement of the airplane is a problem requiring the continuous efforts of highly trained specialists in aerodynamics, structural analysis, design and flight testing." It was this work that would be conducted at Wright Field.
Wright Field was dedicated to engineering advancement while Patterson Field had a logistics mission, which was reflected by the Fairfield Air Depot.

The military presence began here in 1917 when Wilbur Wright Field was opened on the site of today's flightline to train pilots, armories, and gunners during World War I. A depot also began operating here.
Then Wilbur Wright Field was established where the present runway is. In 1924, Wright Field was established on land donated by the community.
Wilbur Wright Field and the depot area became Patterson Field on July 6, 1931, in honor of Lt. Frank Patterson, who was killed in 1918 in a flightline crash of a DH-4 while flight testing the synchronization of machine gun and propeller.
