Topic: Fielding average

Sabermetric Manifesto - The Baseball Archive
Batting average places hits in a reasonable context, and this is recognized because the batting title goes to the player with the highest average, not the player with the most hits.
Fielding average has its problem with the first test; while defense is important, an incomplete measure of defense is not.
It still has some value, particularly in concluding that players with very low fielding averages can't handle their positions, but it should be used in conjunction with putouts, assists, and an attempt to understand any biases in the numbers.

Baseball statistics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The practice was started by Henry Chadwick in the 19th century who devised the concepts of batting average and earned run average based on his experience of cricket.
Traditionally, statistics like batting average for batters (the number of hits divided by the number of at bats) and earned run average (approximately the number of runs given up by a pitcher per nine innings) have governed the statistical world of baseball.
Comprehensive, historical baseball statistics were difficult for the average fan to access until 1951, when researcher Hy Turkin published "The Complete Encyclopedia of Baseball".

Her fielding average is calculated by first adding the number of putouts and assists (42 + 70=112).
You should only use the number to the thousandths-place, and you should not round up, so the fielding average is.973 (there is no need to place the zero before the decimal point.

 The Diamond Angle -Steve Garvey
The so-called "hidden average" tells you how much batting average underrates a player (ie, a player who never walked and had nothing but singles would have a hidden average of 0).
But Garvey's fielding prowess is once again a case of misleading statistics.
Judging these two player with poor tools, batting average and fielding average, makes this two players look like they are on the same playing field.

The average of a batter with 23 hits in six games would be not 3.83 but 35 (an average of 3 with an overage, or remainder, of 5); borrowed from cricket.
That average is defined as a team record of.500 because a league won-lost average must be.500, or as an individual record of zero because the value of the out for a given year is calculated to establish a baseline of zero.
The positional adjustment, or factor for average defensive skill, for a left fielder who played in all 162 games would be 162 X 198/3,202 (which calculates to 10), where 3,202 is the number of games played in both leagues by all left fielders (or any other position, obviously).

In addition, any average infielder is assumed to be able to play 1B with average 1B range, and average OFers can play 1B with a range of about 1.79 (the average range for all positions this year is the same in the AL and NL).
Because Ramirez is under average at third, we have to subtract another six points, thus his SS range would be 4.27.
Average fielding teams do make quite a few outstanding plays (after all, in real life even the worst fielders occasionally make a great play.) But teams with higher ranges make more outstanding plays - those 'extra' outstanding plays represent hits that your pitchers were saved from giving up by your superior fielding range.

Woolner, in his article, compared a pitcher’s BIP to that of his teams, thereby minimizing the influence of the fielders (the same fielders are there for every pitcher on the team, more or less) and the parks.

And unlike football or basketball, where it is difficult to account for the relative value of different stats, baseball statisticians have come up with elaborate formulas to figure out the contribution of each hitter to his team’s runs, and from there even to wins.
However, my theory is that the Red Sox had better fielding than they get credit for, because they knew it was their weak point.
