Fielding percentage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In baseball statistics, fielding percentage, also known as fielding average, is a measure that reflects the percentage of times a defensive player handles a batted or thrown ball properly.
Likewise, a relatively slow outfielder might have a high fielding percentage even though he doesn't reach many of the fly balls which a faster player would catch.
Conversely, a highly skilled fielder might have a comparatively low fielding percentage by virtue of reaching, and potentially missing, a greater number of balls.

Fielding statistics are the red-headed stepchildren of baseball numbers.
Of course Baseball Weekly's fielding data are essentially worthless, because they combine all numbers regardless of position, so a player who has played, say first base and the outfield, will have numbers that are nothing more than an amorphous blob of junk.
For shortstops, claim percentages are rated on a weighted scale, with assists vs. expected assists being 40 points, double plays versus expected DPs being 30 points, error percentage (basically the reverse of -- or 1 minus -- fielding percentage) being 20 and putouts vs team putouts 10 points.

Slick Fielding - Fantasy Baseball Cafe 2004
Many consider fielding percentage too random to predict or don’t want to pass on sluggers in order to draft players who make their living with their gloves.
Dmitri Young, for instance, may not be a gold glove contender at third base (.849 fielding in 2003), but if you factor in the.985 mark he posted in left field, his total is a stellar.975, better than all but Joe Randa’s.980 at third base.
Mark Teixeira will also qualify at third, where his fielding percentage was a meager.811 in 2003, but is slated to play first base and should post significantly improved numbers.

And unlike football or basketball, where it is difficult to account for the relative value of different stats, baseball statisticians have come up with elaborate formulas to figure out the contribution of each hitter to his team’s runs, and from there even to wins.
Therefore, it is obvious that fielding percentage and errors do not sufficiently account for good defense.
