Despite gains made in the number of women in the fields of engineering and in their treatment in the workplace, women make up only about 20% of the US undergraduates in engineering.
When women DO choose to enroll in a College of Engineering, they do so as a one in five minority, which can lead to many types of situations that might tend to discourage them from continuing in the field.
If women begin to enroll in science and engineering in the same proportion as their aptitudes for these fields (the same as those of their male colleagues), then a Women in Engineering Program may no longer be necessary.
