It consisted of a series of monsters published in Dragon Magazine in the "Fiend Factory" section.

Fiend Folio is 224 pages of the most vile and evil fiends to be found in any player's wildest nightmares, with the occasional non-evil creature thrown in for good measure.
The Fiend of Blasphemy provides ample opportunities for roleplaying, as the stated goal of a fiend of this type is to sponsor a cult and to draw worshippers from the true gods to worship the fiend.
The artwork in Fiend Folio is excellent, and virtually all of the monsters are detailed in full color that provide much-needed visuals for players and DMs alike to visualize the many horrors from the Abyss that will surely spring forth into many campaigns.

 RPGnet: Review of Fiend Folio
The Fiend Folio is Wizards of the Coast's latest release for their Dungeons and Dragons 3E game, and consists of over 150 new monsters for the D&D game.
The Fiend Folio is somewhere in the middle, more towards the latter approach than many other D&D monster books (with the notable exception of Monsters of Faerun), and I found the result most pleasing.
The Fiend Folio is a 224 page hardback book, full colour for the most part, and very attractive.

 RPGnet: Review of Fiend Folio
The original Fiend Folio was released in 1981, sort of a British counterpart to the Monster Manual.
The cover of the Fiend Folio is a hellish vista, enclosed by corroding, barbed iron, wrapped in the skin and ichor of demons.
From D&D it recalls the Denzelian of the original Fiend Folio, and the Rock-Eater of the Mines of Bloodstone.

For example, the Fiend of Corruption prestige class provides a way of giving a fiend the extra abilities and skills it needs to be the perfect seducer of mortals.
Give a fiend -- such as succubus -- a few levels of this prestige class and you've got an NPC capable of seducing all manner of mortals and giving the DM useful behind-the-scenes adversary for their players.
The Fiend Folio is excellent for campaigns that spend a fair amount of time plane-hopping, or for DMs who want to be able to spring something new and horrible on their players.

While some of the Fiend Folio original monsters reappear, the Fiend Folio itself reappears without the neat styling that it had when it first appeared in my gaming spheres as almost the first hardcover book I picked up at Payless but my parents didn't want my influenced by DandD (which was too late).
Some of the Fiend Folio has neutral aligned creatures in an attempt to help broaden the usefulness of the book, but these are not the best creatures in the book.
The Fiend Folio does offer some insight on the Outer Planes, at least with regards to what may be found out there to encounter (for campaigning out there, the book directs folks to the Manual of the Planes instead).

While the monsters in the Monster Manuals are primarily authored by Gary Gygax, the monsters in the Fiend Folio are created by players of the game itself in the United Kingdom.
That said, Fiend Folio feature some monsters that survives to this day in the 3rd edition: the slaad, kenku, githyanki, githzerai, aarakocra, achaierai, bullywug, the ever popular death knight, mephits, gibberlings, grimlocks, penaggalan, to name a few.
Overall, Fiend Folio is good, but not as good as Monster Manual.

[Tome of Trouble #79] Fiend Folio review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Way back when, when D&D was still in its first edition, TSR released the Fiend Folio, a collection of monsters and creatures designed to throw a wrench into the plans of the players and give the GM the opportunity to add a little spice to the game.
The Fiend Folio is precisely what it advertises itself to be: a collection of new monsters, some of which have appeared in earlier versions of D&D and some that are completely new.
Because of this, the Fiend Folio feels lopsided, as if the writers started out creating a creature collection specifically for use with the Manual of the Planes but decided instead to do a more general book.

Fiend Folio - RPG Reviews - GameWyrd   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The Fiend Folio is so-called because it has lots of extraplanar creatures in it, although there are plenty of Material Plane creatures too, and that some extraplanar creatures happen to be fiends, although there are plenty that are not.
The Fiend Folio begins with an alphabetical list of monsters and concludes with an index of monsters (surely they mean fiends!) listed by Challenge Rating.
If you have the Tome of Horrors from Necromancer Games already then you'll find the Fiend Folio isn't such the boost it could be since a good chunk of the entries in the Folio have been taken straight out of the Tome.

There was no real reason, other than the fact that the first time I had the chance to look at the book, I'd just been to the optometrist and my eyes were all woogly.
The back of the book says that the major focus is on "fiends," which is a trifle misleading as there aren't that many new true fiends, meaning baatezu or ta'anari.

If this book had been fully 3.5 I would have at least considered buying it but as it is, you should wait for a new "revised" version of this book (if there ever is one) before you buy, otherwise your buying a book for a gaming system that just isn't there.
If you have the opportunity to pick this up for a couple bucks, then it might make sense, as this book, with its few new worthwhile additions and lots of pointless rehashes, is about the D&D equivalent of a 10 cent yard sale grab bag.
Scrabble has been a favorite in the world of word games for generations (in fact, more than 50 years) and is still a great game to boost one's vocabulary and word power.

As far as the 1E Fiend Folio goes, I like it...Dark Creepers, Volts, Fire Drakes, Revenants, Scarecrows and Yellow Musk Zombies are more my style than Digesters, Yrthaks, Gray Renders, Ethereal Filchers, Tojanidas and Krenshars.
Oh please, without the original Fiend Folio we would be without the unibunny (al-mi'raj), the fly with an attitude (assassin bug), the purty treasure cat (guardian familiar) and grumpy bigfoot (quaggoth) not to mention more mostly naked females (lamia noble and caryatid column).
That would be the Fiend Factory (where most of the monsters came from) and an open call for original monsters to be sold would be a pretty cool idea.

I was hoping for something like the original 1st Edition Fiend Folio, but this focuses more on extraplanar monsters - fiends and elementals, for example.
You can never have enough monsters in my opinion, and though you may never use them all, it's always lovely to have a gibbering, twitching, growling hoard ready and waiting....just in case.
This, the latest manifestation of 'Fiend Folio', stays true to the ethos of that original, 1st edition version (the one with the Githyanki on the cover, and the 'fighting fantasy' style art inside), in that it describes some genuinely unique and unusual beasties.
