 Detailing Huma's 1/72 Fieseler Fi 5 Sportplane
My first impression upon opening the medium sized box of the Huma Fieseler Fi 5 was one of surprise, the small sprue of parts, decal sheet and instructions occupying very little of the box.
A feature of Fieseler's with the Hirth HM 60 R engine was a small raised square cover on the upper port cowl which Huma give as a scribed box; since I was modeling an aircraft with the HM 60 I filled this area, but those modeling the kit aircraft should fabricate this raised cover.
Using the photos I was able to determine that the registration was carried on the top and bottom of both wings and the fuselage sides, as well as the number '32' on both sides of the tailfin.

The visitor explained that he had been part of the American forces who captured Fieseler at the end of the war, and that he had swept a number of photos and sketches off of Fieseler's desk to keep as souvenirs.

The Storch (Stork) was designed in 1935 by Fieseler, Mewes and Bachem, in response to a contest for a general utility airplane by the RLM.

German Fi 103, FZG 76 or V-1 missile ("Vergeltungswaffen-1") was one of several "secret weapons" with which German leader Adolf Hitler hoped to stave off disaster in the closing year of World War II.
The project was given high priority by the German High Command in 1942, with Fieseler Flugzeugbau Plant in Kassel, taking the leading development role.
The Fi 103/A1 and the Fi 103/A1 differentiated in the fashion of the front part with warhead.

To solve this difficulty the Heinkel He 111 was modified (H 22) to launch the Fi 103 from the air in what is now called "stand off".

In configuration the Fieseler design was a two-bay foldable wing biplane, primarily of metal construction but with some fabric covering, fixed tailwheel landing gear with tall jettisonable main units, a conventional braced tail unit and a Daimler Benz DB 601 engine.
As with the Fi 156 Storch, Fieseler's new aircraft had exceptional low-speed characteristics, achieved in this case by both wings incorporating ailerons and full-span automatic leading edge slats, and the lower wing having large area trailing-edge flaps.
The Fi 167 was intended for service aboard the German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin, launched on 8 December 1938, and following the completion of a second prototype a pre-production batch of 12 Fi-167 aircraft was built.

Intended for use against shipping or heavily-defended ground targets, the piloted Fi 103 missile was developed under the code-name Reichenberg, and its progenitors were primarily Flugkapitdn Hanna Reitsch, the internationally-famous German woman pilot, and SS-Hauptsturmfdhrer Otto Skorzeny.
The operational model was the Reichenberg IV, and its conversion from the standard Fi 103 missile was the essence of simplicity.
Along with the Reichenberg, another interesting dead-end adaptation of the V-1 was its use as an external fuel tank that could be towed behind an aircraft by a long pipe, with the pipe acting as both tow bar and fuel connection.

Designed as a carrier based torpedo bomber, the Fi 167 proved to be a superb aircraft for the task but unfortunately the task never materialized with the abandonment of the Graf Zeppelin.
One notable demonstration showed the types excellent low speed performance when Fiesler himself sank the Fi 167 from 9,800 ft. to 100 ft. while remaining stationary over one spot while retaining full control.
Twelve A-0 series aircraft followed the prototype, but without a carrier were delegated to coastal patrol duties in the Netherlands from 1940-1943 before eventually being sold to Romania.
